BMW set to launch electric iX SUV in India on December 10

BMW is gearing to bring its electric SUV to India kickstarting from its iX models. The company has also scheduled a launch event for December 10 to host the variants – iX xDrive 40 and iX xDrive 50. The two models have been already debuted in the global market.

Though BMW is a little late to join the race of premium EVs as the brands including Mercedes-Benz, Audio, and Porche are already selling their electric cars in India. However, BMW is planning to launch three different models in the next six months starting from December with iX SUV. Later, the German carmaker will unveil the Mini Electric model after three months and then BMW i4 electric sedan further in six months.

BMW iX Model Features (Global Variant)

Starting off with the mileage, BMW iX xDrive 50 provides up to 611 km and reaches 100kmph of speed within 4.6 seconds. It packs 523hp power and 675Nm of maximum torque, While iX xDrive 40 gains the speed of 100kmph in 6.1 seconds and offers a driving range of up to 414km. It ships with 326hp power and 630Nm of peak torque.

Both the iX models follow the BMW’s iNext Concept and sport a number of cameras, sensors, and radar set up to offer an improved driver assistance system. The premium electric cars come with a dual electric motor equipped on each axle to deliver an all-wheel driving experience. They feature a hexagonal steering wheel, a big infotainment and instrument cluster display. 

The battery capacity if xDrive 50 is 105.2 KWh claimed to take 35 minutes to charge up to 80% of capacity. On the other hand, xDrive 40 sports a 71KWh battery taking 31 minutes to reach 80% of charging. Both models support 195kW DC fast charging. The BMW iX xDrive is expected to be priced between Rs 1 crore to Rs 1.5 crore.

When asked about ongoing import tax-cut discussion with the Indian government, Vikram Pawah, President of BMW Group India told, “I don’t think any one of us doesn’t want to manufacture [locally]. We already do. What we are talking about is do we want to wait for certain years before bringing these technologies into the country or are we ready to fast-track these technologies into the country for the betterment of the country.”
