Qualcomm’s mid-tier Snapdragon 765 and 765G chips that come with integrated 5G modems are proving to be more popular than flagship Snapdragon 800 series chips.

5G is already shaping up to be a popular trend, and Qualcomm projects up to 1.4 Billion 5G phones to ship in the next 2 years. The Snapdragon 765 and 765G have integrated X52 modem with dual-mode 5G support that would make them globally viable 5G options for foreseeable future.

Last year, the Snapdragon 700-series chips from current and last year were quite popular across the broad mid-range. The Snapdragon 765 caters to the premium mid-range segment.

Snapdragon 765 and Snapdragon 765G Features

  1. The CPU architecture is manufactured on Samsung’s 7nm EUV process. This time around Qualcomm uses 1 Prime and 1 Gold performance-centric Kryo 475 CPUs with 6 Silver efficiency-based Kryo 475 CPUs.
  2. The Prime cores used in SD 765G tick at 2.4 GHz whereas the ones in SD 765 are clocked at 2.3 GHz. The ‘G’ variant is said to deliver up to 20 percent performance gain over the standard Snapdragon 765.
  3. Qualcomm’s performance-centric Kryo 475 CPUs are based on ARM’s Cortex-A76 cores. In comparison, Samsung’s Exynos 980 employs the latest Cortex A77-cores.
  4. We do see an upgrade in the GPU. Adreno 620 manages a 20% increase in performance in the case of SD 765 SoC and a 38% performance boost in 765G.
  5. Further, we have Hexagon 696 as the DSP along with AI processing capable up to 5.4TOPS.
  6. Camera capabilities see a noticeable improvement. Snapdragon 765 series supports up to 1 x 192MP or 36MP with Zero Shutter Lag (ZSL) or 2x 22MP with ZSL. The Snapdragon 765G will be used in the first set of 192MP camera phones.

As mentioned above, the integrated 5G modem isn’t exclusive to the ‘G’ variant. Qualcomm claims up to 3.7 Gbps download speeds and both of these chipsets have support for mmWave, Sub-6GHz, NSA and SA 5G architecture.

As for the benefits of an Integrated modem implementation – it saves space and results in better power efficiency. Samsung’s Exynos 980, MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000, and Huawei’s Kirin 990G are other chipsets that offer integrated 5G modem.

The implementation, however, pushes the weight to 260 grams and throws the possibility of water resistance out the window.

Pixel 5 is being sold by third-party sellers in India, but it’s prohibitively expensive. Users can very well go for the slim and compact Pixel 4a for clean stock Android experience.

6. Redmi K30 5G

Redmi K30

We don’t usually see curved-edge AMOLED screens on mid-range phones, but Axon 11 does deliver one for a reasonable price of roughly 30K. It’s also so much lighter and slimmer than most other 5G phones out there.

There are four cameras on the rear housed in a square module, and the primary one has a 64MP sensor. There is no punch-hole on the screen, and the selfie camera resides within a dew-drop notch.

At the same time, the adoption for the SoC has been lower than our expectations. In 2021, manufacturers are resorting to alternatives like MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 750G in India.
