Chinese manufacturer OnePlus has launched their new flagship device OnePlus 6T (review) at a press event in New York. The upcoming flagship has been in the news for quite some time now and tech enthusiasts around the globe have been eagerly awaiting its official unveiling.

OnePlus has revealed early on the controversial changes like the new optical in-display fingerprint sensor and elimination of audio jack. At the launch, OnePlus talked about other subtle enhancements that justify the upgrade. Let’s talk about all that has changed from OnePlus 6T to OnePlus 6.

OnePlus 6T Price and Availability

The new OnePlus 6T has been priced at $549 for the base variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. We can expect the Indian price to be around Rs.37,999.

Unlike the last time, we do not have a 64GB variant this time.

1. In-display Fingerprint sensor (Screen Unlock)

One of the major difference between OnePlus 6 and 6T is the use of in-display fingerprint sensor as opposed to the traditional capacitive sensors. OnePlus has been teasing regarding this feature since the inception of the marketing for this device.

While we do find front-mounted biometric sensors to be more convenient (and swanky), there is no denying that these optical sensors are inherently slower and less reliable than capacitive sensors on regular phones.

2. No Audio Jack

To make room for its in-display sensor and bigger battery, OnePlus has decided to ditch the jack. This isn’t bound to sit well with fans, but at the same time, OnePlus isn’t the first major OEM to ditch the good old Jack. We don’t agree with the decision, but perhaps this is the way forward.

3. Smaller Notch

OnePlus 6T will sport a smaller water-drop notch this time that entails minimal status bar penalty. The display in itself is marginally bigger (6.41-inches diagonally) and now has 19.5:9 aspect ratio.

It is interesting to note that OnePlus has not cut down on the sensors usually present on the front. The ambient light, distance, and RGB sensor have been accommodated within the tiny waterdrop notch. However, the LED notification light didn’t make the cut.

4. Bigger battery

OnePlus has also bumped up the battery of the new device to 3,700 mAh while retaining the fast charging support. OnePlus has given its fast-charging technology a new name and it will be referred to as OnePlus Fast charge from now on.

5. Nightscape

The new OnePlus 6T camera is equipped with Nightscape to turn your night shots into brighter and picturesque images. The night mode lowers the ISO and keeps the shutter open for a longer duration while also stabilizing to negate handshake.

Other than that, the camera app gets enhanced supports Super Slow Motion video capture (1080p videos at 240fps and 720p videos at 480fps), enhanced HDR mode, and improved portrait mode – claims OnePlus.

6. Smart Boost

OnePlus has added a Smart Boost feature which improves cold-start speeds for apps by up to 20%. It works by storing data from frequently used apps in the RAM and is particularly helpful for apps requiring a lot of input and output (that is, for gaming apps). It will be worthwhile to see OnePlus pushing limits to make use of the huge chunk of RAM that it has been including on its flagships.

7. Gaming Mode

OnePlus also highlighted a few changes it made to Gaming mode on Oxygen OS. Notifications from third-party messaging apps will now appear as floating bubbles or users will have the option to customize notifications as white text on the top of the display.

8. Long press power button to launch Google Assistant

On the OnePlus 6T, you can long press the power button to launch Google Assistant. This should prove helpful for anyone who regularly uses Google Assistant or is invested in Google’s Home ecosystem.
