Xiaomi MIUI 12 Android-based custom skin is officially announced. The software’s still Android 10 but ushers in a swathe of features, UI, and performance improvements. This includes real-time colors, real-time blur, smoother animations, new privacy settings, and health features.

We have collated a bunch of screenshots of the purported MIUI 12. C’mon, let’s have a look.

Top MIUI 12 features for Mi, Redmi and Poco Phones

These are mostly UI improvements, as with every incremental update.

1. Dark Mode 2.0

Dar Mode 2.0 introduces

  • wallpaper dimming which can even work automatically based on time of the day.
  • The font structure, contrast, and detail will adjust to ensure it’s easy on your eyes.
  • Force dark mode for apps that don’t natively feature a dark theme. This basically inverts colors to furnish a dark appeal.

Xiaomi extols the speed and smoothness of these new animations. An animation that you’d notice is how apps minimize back to the icon on the homescreen. A small change yet pretty evident.

The navigation has inched closer to stock Android 10 treatment. You may have to enable it by going to Settings > Additional Settings > Toggle on ‘Full-Screen Gestures’

4. Stronger Privacy & Security measures

  • It keeps a track of permissions granted to various apps and warns you about mischievous behavior using colored LED notification lights.
  • Apps will seek your permission and you can allow only once, allow every time, or reject it altogether.
  • Finally, there is a new virtual ID security protocol that lets you spoof information granted to suspicious apps. It’ll send dummy details instead of real data. Furthermore, if you want to, it will let you block certain permissions from dubious apps.

5. Floating Window

MIUI 12 gets floating windows for full-screen apps that can be resized and reshaped multiple ways opening up multi-tasking prospects.

You can access this function in 3 ways:

  • Open your recent menu, tap the ‘Floating Windows’ option situated at the top left corner. In the subsequent screen, you can select the app you want to open in a tiny resizable hovering window. BTW, only a few apps support this feature.
  • Alternately, when you are in the Recents menu, long-press on an app preview and then click the picture-in-picture icon.
  • Tap the floating window option in the Control Center.

6. Health & Fitness Features

The in-built gyrosensor is claimed to be about 96% accurate as Apple Watch. It could be used to monitor walking, running, walking, cycling, stair-climbing, and other fitness exercises. There is even a sleep-tracker to keep a tab on sleep hygiene.

7. iOS-like Control Center

MIUI finally succumbs to the iOS-like control center. The traditional quick settings panel has been replaced with this.

Swipe down along the top left side/center of the display to access the notification drawer and

Swipe down along the top right to access the control center. The design language of this menu looks a lot inspired by the iOS 12.

Now, this feature might come across as polarizing. The good news is that you get an option to switch back to the old-school implementation. Go to Settings > Display > Status Bar > Toggle off ‘Use Control Center’.

8. New and Improved App UIs and Features

  • Memories, which can be used to create collages or short videos using the existing images or videos you have.
  • Enhanced Sorting menu that lets you arrange files by name, size, date of creation, or file type. Even the view options are clubbed with this menu.
  • Xiaomi’s XiaoAI voice assistant is touted to handle calls like a human would. The so-called AI calling resembles the Google Assistant’s Call Screen.
  • Mi-Share is now upgraded to work with Mi Notebooks and RedmiBook laptops (both of which are available in China only).
  • New icons and rounded Roboto font.
