As smartphone tech seeks new solutions to accommodate bigger and better screens, the foldable smartphone has become an inevitable answer. We have been talking about Foldable phones for many years now, but it’s only now that they have gone mainstream. 

There were numerous hurdles, but the foldable phones did make it to markets in late 2019. Now, it’s been 5 years since the foldable first made their debut in the smartphone market. While Samsung was the first to make foldables available for consumers, many smartphone brands across the world have joined in now. 

We have seen foldables from pretty much every major smartphone brand including OnePlus, Google, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, Huawei, and, of course, Samsung. Let’s explore all the foldable smartphone options that we have in 2024.

List of the Best Folding Phones to Buy in 2024

Here’s a list of foldable phones that are already out and you can buy. Some of these foldables might only be available in China.

1. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5

Samsung launched the next-generation foldable phones last month. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset with 12GB RAM and up to 1TB onboard storage. The foldable sports a 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 6.2-inch HD+ cover display that is also a Dynamic AMOLED panel with 120Hz adaptive refresh rates.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a 50MP+12MP+10MP camera setup at the back and a 10MP+4MP setup at the front. It runs Android 13 OS and packs a 4400mAh battery with 25W fast charging. The foldable measures 67.1×154.9×13.4mm and weighs 253 grams. It also comes with an IPX8 rating and will be available for Rs. 1,54,999 from August 18 in India. Galaxy Z Fold 5 can be purchased online as well as offline. This device was launched in 2023.

2. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

Samsung also unveiled the next-generation Flip phone alongside the Z Fold 5. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex display and a cover 3.4-inch AMOLED cover display. It packs a 3700mAh battery with 25W charging.

At the back is a 12MP+12MP rear camera setup while at the front is a 10MP camera. It runs Android 13 and is IPX8-rated. Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be available for Rs. 99,999 in India from August 18.

display will be a 6.8-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. There will be a 32MP selfie lens and the foldable might pack a 4300mAh battery with 44W fast charging. The foldable will also have an IPX4 rating and Gorilla Glass 5 protection. This device was launched in 2023.

3. Moto Razr 40 Ultra

Motorola launched its next Razr Series in India last month. The Moto Razr 40 Ultra is the top-end model that is powered by Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset with 8GB RAM and 256GB onboard storage. It has a 13MP+12MP camera setup at the back and a 32MP selfie camera at the front. The flip phone packs a 3800mAh battery with 30W fast charging.

The flip phone is 15.1mm thick when folded and 6.99mm when unfolded. It sports a 6.9-inch display when unfolded with a 165Hz refresh rate. There is a 3.6-inch P-OLED cover screen with a 144Hz refresh rate. It is available for Rs. 89,999 via Amazon. This device was launched in 2023.

4. Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold 3

Xiaomi will soon launch Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 in the global market. The foldable is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. It might pack a 4800mAh battery with 67W fast charging capability and a 32MP selfie camera at the front. At the back will be a 50MP Quad camera setup while the foldable will run Android 13 OS.

The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is said to have an 8.02-inch main display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The foldable might soon come to India at a starting price of Rs. 1,09,990. This device was launched in 2023.

5. Moto Razr 40

The base model of the Razr 40 Series, the Moto Razr 40 has been launched to make foldable more accessible to people in India. It is powered by Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. The foldable has a 4200mAh battery under the hood with 30W charging. There is a 64MP primary and a 13MP secondary lens at the back and a 32MP lens at the front.

There is a 6.9-inch P-OLED main display with a 144Hz refresh rate and a 1.5-inch OLED external display with a resolution of 368×194 pixels. It runs Android 13 and is available in India for Rs. 59,999. This device was launched in 2023.

6. OnePlus Open

OnePlus has confirmed that it will be the first foldable very soon. The brand has also confirmed the name to be OnePlus Open and the expected launch date is 29th of August. OnePlus Open is expected to have a 7.8-inch 2K AMOLED inner screen and a 6.3-inch AMOLED outer screen, both having a refresh rate of 120Hz. The foldable might be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset with 16GB RAM and 256GB storage.

In terms of camera, Open might have a 50MP main sensor at the back with OIS along with a 48MP ultrawide and a 32MP periscope lens. There might be two 32MP cameras at the front. The smartphone is expected to arrive in black, gold, and green shades. This device was launched in late 2023.

7. Tecno V Fold

Tecno launched the Phantom V Fold smartphone in 2023. It is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Plus chipset with 12GB RAM. There is a 7.85-inch LTPO AMOLED main display and a 6.42-inch FHD+ LTPO curved display on the outside. It gets a 50MP+50MP+13MP triple camera setup at the back and a 32MP+16MP camera setup at the front.

The foldable runs Android 13 OS and packs a 5000mAh battery with 45W fast charging. It is available online starting at Rs. 75,000. Tecno V Fold was launched in 2023.

8. Vivo X Fold3 / Fold3 Pro

The Vivo X Fold3 and X Fold3 Pro will feature an 8.03-inch 2K+ 120Hz Samsung E7 AMOLED LTPO outer display, HDR 10+, Dolby Vision, and a 6.53-inch FHD+ AMOLED inner display with 120Hz refresh rate. The cameras include a 50MP main shooter + 50 MP ultrawide lens + 64 MP periscope module, all with OIS and V3 imaging chip. 

Both foldables run on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3  Mobile Platform with Adreno 750 GPU, 16 GB LPDDR5X RAM, and 1 TB of UFS 4.0 storage. The software will be OriginOS 4 based on Android 14. Fingerprint sensors will be in-display ultrasonic on the inside and outside. The Vivo X Fold3 Pro is priced at CNY 13,999 or $1,945 (INR 1,60,000) in China and is expected to launch globally this time.

9. Huawei Mate X5

The Huawei Mate X5 is a foldable smartphone with a 7.85-inch OLED primary display and a 6.4-inch cover display, both with 120Hz refresh rates. It runs on a Kirin 9000s chipset with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. It has a triple rear camera setup (50MP + 13MP + 12MP) and an 8MP selfie camera. 

The phone runs on HarmonyOS 4.0 and has a 5060mAh battery with 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. Other features include Beidou satellite message support, AI air control, a camera treasure box, in-screen navigation, a side fingerprint sensor, and USB Type-C connectivity. The phone has already launched in mainland China but we are not sure if it will ever make it outside of China.

10. Honor V Purse

The Honor V Purse is an affordable foldable smartphone from Honor that was launched in China last year. We are including this foldable as it is expected to launch globally soon. The device is a 7.71-inch foldable (unfolded) and 6.45 inches when folded. Unlike other foldable that have two different screens, the Honor V Purse folds the display outwards making it a 2-in-1.

Under the hood, the Honor V Purse uses the Snapdragon 778G Mobile Platform paired with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB or 512 GB of storage. It has a 50 MP + 12 MP (ultra-wide) camera setup and an 8 MP front camera. The phone has a 4500 mAh battery with 35W fast charging. The phone was launched at ¥5999 or $822 (INR 69,755) in China. 

11. Google Pixel Fold

Google Pixel Fold is expected to come to India very soon. It will have a 7.6-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and run Android 13 out of the box. The foldable will be powered by a Tensor G2 chipset with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The Google Pixel Fold will draw juice from a 4821mAh battery with 30W fast charging.

In terms of camera optics, the Pixel Fold will have a 48MP+10.8MP+10.8MP camera setup at the back and a 9.5MP+8MP camera at the front. Google Pixel Fold is expected to cost Rs. 1,46,990 in India.

Upcoming Foldables of 2024

Here is a list of all the foldables that will be launching later this year, in 2024.

1. Galaxy Z Fold 6

Z Fold 6

The Samsung Z Fold 6 will feature a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED cover display and a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED inner display, both with a 120 Hz refresh rate. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy chipset, with 12 GB or 16 GB of RAM and storage options up to 1 TB UFS 4.0. 

The device is expected to have a triple camera setup with a 50 MP + 12 MP + 10 MP rear camera configuration and a 10 MP selfie camera, along with a 4 MP under-display camera. Running on One UI 6.1.1 based on Android 14, the Z Fold 6 is expected to receive 7 major OS updates and 7 years of security updates, and have Galaxy AI features. It is expected to be announced in late July 2024 at an Unpacked event.

2. Galaxy Z Flip 6

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is rumored to feature a 3.9-inch cover display and a 6.7-inch inner display, both with a 120 Hz refresh rate. It may have Gorilla Glass Armor protection, potentially only on the cover display, and an improved hinge design. 

The phone is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip with a larger cooling system, paired with 12 GB of RAM. It could also come with a 4000 mAh battery supporting 25W fast charging. The camera setup may include a 50 MP main camera + 12 MP ultra-wide lens. The device is expected to launch in July 2024.

3. Google Pixel Fold 2

The Google Pixel Fold 2 is rumored to have an 8.02-inch foldable display and a 6.29-inch cover display, a larger battery than the original Pixel Fold, a refreshed design, and upgraded faster charging. It will likely debut with Android 14, upgradable to Android 15, and receive seven years of software updates, powered by the Google Tensor G3.

The device is expected to be teased in May 2024 and launched in July, priced around $1,799 like its predecessor. It may feature improved cameras, storage options of 256GB, 512GB, or possibly 1TB, and a redesigned square-ish camera island and narrower cover screen.

4. Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE

With the Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE, Samsung is looking to make foldables more affordable and accessible for everyone. This new FE book-style foldable will likely have a sleek design and a 120 Hz display on the inner and the outer screen. As for the SoC, we can expect that be the newly released Snapdragon 8s Gen 3.

The device should also pack in a 50 MP + 12 MP + 10 MP camera system, a 4400 mAh battery, and 25W fast charging. Rumours suggest that the device will be priced at $800, which is half the price of the non-FE model. The device could launch in July 2024, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6. If that’s not the case, expect a launch in October 2024.

5. Xiaomi Mix Fold 4

While the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 was launched only in China, we can expect its successor, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 to launch globally as well. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 could have an 8.03-inch inner display and a 6.56-inch outer display protected by Gorilla Glass Armor.

Under the hood, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 is expected to sport the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, paired with up to 16 GB RAM and 1 TB of UFS 4.0 storage. As for the cameras, the foldable could sport a 50 MP + 50 MP + 50 MP setup, similar to what we have on the Xiaomi 14. 

Again, the battery is expected to be 4880 mAh and has support for up to 67W wired and 50W wireless charging. When the device launches in India, expect the price to be around INR 1,00,000.

Here in Malaysia, I think we don’t have Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 in 512gb, only 256gb available (with no memory card slot). Also,Samsung Flip most probably is not 5G here. Can you check?
