Design and Build

Both OnePlus and Asus have taken the phones aesthetics and build quality seriously. Both are relying on metal and glass but both have given it a different treatment. In fact, OnePlus offers its 2018 flagship in 3 different avatar that includes Glossy Black Mirror variant, a matte finish Slik White and scorching Red color. Asus, on the other hand, offers the Zenfone 5Z in two accents Silver and Black.

. They both these metal-glass phones come with a notch on the front and a slight amount of bezel at the bottom. However, there are things that they both do differently.

For instance, the Asus Zenfone 5z has a slightly bigger notch than the OP 6, but that’s because the former has a stereo speaker in it. The edges are also not very curvy on Zenfone 5z, and you have the volume rockers and power button both on the right edge of the phone.

In the similar context, the OnePlus 6 has a power button on the right edge and volume rockers on the left edge. Besides, it also sports a slider that lets you switch the phone ‘s ringer modes from general, silent and vibration only.

The top edge of both the phones has nothing to show, whereas the bottom edge is where you will find USB Type-C port, Speaker grill, and 3.5mm headphone jack. Both phones feature a fingerprint sensor is on the rear panel, and there is no wireless charging on either phones.

All in all, both these phones have an appealing design and should appeal to buyers in 2018. OnePlus 6 though has a slight advantage as it offers more color variations to choose from.

Display

Both the phones houses excellent displays. While the Asus Zenfone 5Z sports 6.2-inch Super LCD OnePlus opts for a 6.28-inch Optic AMOLED display for infinite contrast, deep blacks, and low power consumption. The super LCD panel on the Zenfone is also equally awesome with good brightness level and well-calibrated colors.

Performance and Software

As of today, these two are the only Snapdragon 845 phones available in India as of now. There’s hardly anything that differentiates between these two phones in terms of hardware. Both are similarly specced with Snapdragon 845 enthralling at the heart with 6GB/ 8GB LPDDR4X RAM. Both phones are offered with 64GB/128GB/256GB UFS 2.1 storage.

Now, the storage should be enough for most of the users but keep in the back of your mind that OnePlus 6 doesn’t have a microSD card slot, therefore aim for the right variant. Contrary to this, the Zenfone 5Z does give you the liberty to add microSD card slot, but it comes with an expanse of sacrificing the second SIM slot.

The Asus Zenfone 5Z and OnePlus 6 both run on Android Oreo as their base OS and employs a custom UI skin on top. While Zenfone 5Z has Zen UI 5.0, the OnePlus 6 interacts to you with Oxygen OS. The UIs are feature rich at the same time it is closest to stock Android.

Camera and Battery

On the camera front, the Asus Zenone 5Z sports a primary 12-megapixel sensor with f/1.8 aperture lens, 4-axis OIS, and a secondary 8-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture lens and LED flash, on the rear panel. Its selfie camera is an 8-megapixel shooter with f/2.0 aperture lens. The slo-mo option is there on the camera app, and you can shoot videos at 60fps.

Whereas the OnePlus 6 sports a dual 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel sensor with f/1.7 aperture lens, OIS and EIS support, LED flash and 4k video recording at 60fps. Up front, the camera features a 16-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture lens. It can also shoot slo-mo videos.

The cameras require some thorough testing, before jumping on conclusion. However, the AI and few other hardware stuff give Asus Zenfone 5z an upper hand here. The phone has 5x light sensitivity for better low light photos and AI scene detection to bring out the best.

As for the battery, it is a tie here as Zenfone 5z and OnePlus 6 both houses 3300mAh battery with fast charging support.

Verdict: Which one should you buy?

Both Asus Zenfone 5z and OnePlus 6 have comfortably made it to finishing line without tumbling down. Both phones go-toe-to-toe throughout the comparison which makes it very difficult to say one is better than the other. There are very little things that differentiate these two phones on the specs count.

Therefore, it boils down the price factor where Asus Zenfone 5Z has a clear advantage over the OnePlus 6. The Zenfone 5Z starts at Rs 29,999 (Include bank offer and it costs Rs 26,999) whereas OnePlus 6 starts at Rs 34,999 (Rs 32,999 after bank cashback). Therefore, all those who are price sensitive should go for Zenfone 5Z and those who don’t mind paying a couple of thousands more for AMOLED display and dash charging should opt for OnePlus 6.

What works for Asus Zenfone 5z:

  • Hybrid-microSD card slot
  • Dual Speaker for louder
  • Cheaper
