Design and Display

Question: How is the Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra design?

Answer: It does turn heads, not for the right reasons, though. Most people were convinced that this is a tablet when they first saw it, and I am not sure if the two form factors any different anymore.

With the Zenfone 3 Ultra, Asus isn’t going that extra mile to fit in a 6.8-inch display in, say, a 6.44-inch phone body. It’s unabashedly a big phone, but at the same time, measures have been taken to make this as user-friendly a Big phone as possible.

If it were any slimmer, you wouldn’t get that optimum grip and if it were any broader, handling it would have been a bigger pain. Also, the volume rocker on the rear is relatively easier to maneuver when you are making calls or holding the phone in portrait mode.

The fingerprint sensor is on the front and works reasonably well. This is perhaps as comfortable as it gets with a 6.8-inch display phone.

Asus is also using flat metal rear and rounded metal side frame (with chamfered edges). In a way, the choice of materials used further ascertain its position as a smartphone.

Question: How is the build quality of the Zenfone 3 Ultra?

Answer: as mentioned, the full metal build makes it a solid 233grams mass, but there is some gap between the touch glass and display resulting in some flexes. This, however, shouldn’t be a problem and will also help protect the touch glass from shattering in case you drop your phone (which is quite likely here). Also, the home button juts out a bit which makes it prone to scratches.

Question: Are the capacitive keys on Zenfone 3 Ultra backlit?

Answer:  Yes. It does.

Question: How is the display of Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra?

Answer:  When you are a designing a phone centered around a big screen and are selling it for 40K, it’s only imperative that you get the display right. And the Zenfone 3 doesn’t falter in this key area.

The display is bright, has wide viewing angles, a blue light filter for extended reading, high contrast, wide dynamic range, and is well suited for consuming multimedia content. It isn’t a QHD display, but full HD works fine since it’s an IPS LCD panel.

Question: How is the outdoor visibility? Does the Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra has the option for automatic brightness?

Answer: Yes, auto brightness option is present and works well. The display is legible under direct sunlight.

Question: Does the Zenfone 3 Ultra display has gorilla glass protection?

Answer: Yes, it does.

Question: How is the day-to-day or general performance? How is gaming performance of Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra?

Answer: The Zenfone 3 Ultra is powered by Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor which is a capable performer, yet is a decidedly mid-range SoC. If you are considering buying this, it’s most probably because your primary usage needs include consuming multimedia contents, and to that end, the chipset serves well.

Also, most high-end games that we tried ran without any issues. Day to day performance was perfectly smooth.

Question: Does Zenfone 3 Ultra has heating issues?

Answer: No, it doesn’t.

Question: Does Zenfone 3 Ultra support Google cardboard and other VR Apps?

Answer: Yes, it does. Though we are not sure if it would fit in any VR headset.

Camera

Question: How is the Zenfone 3 Ultra camera quality?

Answer: Asus isn’t compromising with camera quality here. The handset comes with a 23MP Sony IMX318 sensor with wide f/2.0 aperture optics. This is veritably high-end camera optics, but the real world performance is a notch below what we had expected.

Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra (1)

The performance is great outdoors under direct sunlight, but in artificial indoor light, there is a lot of noise in images. The camera software is feature rich but slows the camera app a bit.

While the camera performance is certainly decent, it can’t match the likes of OnePlus 3, and other tier one branded competition.

Question: How well does the HDR Mode and Pro Mode work on the Zenfone 3 Ultra camera?

Answer: Both the HDR pro and Professional mode on Zenfone 3 Ultra work good.

Question: Can the Zenfone 3 Ultra shoot 4K videos?

Answer: Yes, you can shoot Slow motion videos in up to Full HD resolution.

Software

Question: How is the software on the Zenfone 3 Ultra?

Answer: The Zenfone 3 Ultra is running Android Marshmallow out of the box, but you can update it to Android 7.0 Nougat. As always, there are several preloaded apps here and 40 or so line up for update as soon as you connect to Wi-Fi.

The interface is loaded with customization options and that’s a good thing because since this is a unique device, you will need to program it according to you individual needs. The one option we used most frequently was the one-handed mode that can be triggered with the double pressing of the home button. Considering the sheer size of the handset, this works very well.

Question: Does Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra support Reliance Jio SIM cards/ 4G VoLTE?

Answer: Yes. The 4G VoLTE support was recently added with an OTA update.

Question: How is the Battery backup on Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra?

Answer: The handset can comfortably last for more than a day, but the battery depletes fast when the screen is on. Due to its form factor, we weren’t fidling with it very often and thus on most days managed to hit bed time with over 30 percent juice remaining.
