Huawei’s widely uses in-house produced Kirin branded chips on its phones. Almost all flagship phones from the brand in the last year are powered by Kirin 970, the first chip with a dedicated Neural engine. If the latest developments are to be believed, the OEM is working on a new chipset that could be twice as powerful as the current flagship Kirin 970.

In fact, the new-powerful chipset,  allegedly dubbed as Kirin 1020, will also be a significant jump over the yet unannounced 7nm process-based Kirin 980 as well.

Huawei Kirin 980 to Kirin 1020

The Kirin 980 is going to be the successor of Kirin 970 SoC, to be announced later this year. The chipset will boast of the advanced 7nm manufacturing process from TSMC, which is a step ahead of the 10nm process Qualcomm is currently using for its high-end chipsets.

The Kirin 1020, on the other hand, will be among the first chipsets to support 5G bandwidth. Unfortunately, we don’t have complete specifications of the Kirin 1020 as of now. But, once the first 5G network launches, Huawei will be ready with the Kirin 1020’s mass production and the chipset will appear on company’s devices soon after, said a report.

Whatever be the case, the Kirin 980 and Kirin 1020 SoC could lend Huawei an edge against Qualcomm as far as raw performance is concerned.
