In last couple of years, Samsung hasn’t been playing on the front foot in the budget price segment. Meanwhile, the likes of Xiaomi and Lenovo made inroads with this aggressive pricing and competent devices, primarily leveraging their online channels.

This year, the South-Korean company has already launched two new competitively priced online smartphones – Galaxy A8+ 2018 and the Galaxy On7 Prime – hinting at a clear strategy to tap online retail channels. Galaxy On7 Prime Look and Feel

Question: How is the Galaxy On7 Prime design?

Answer: For budget phones, Samsung seems to be following the philosophy of not fiddling with what isn’t broken. The Galaxy On7 Prime almost looks like a carbon copy of the last year’s Galaxy J7 Prime. Apart from the change in front bezels color and navigation button design, it is more or less the same phone. Having said that, its design is not entirely a turn-off. The phone’s shell is predominantly made of metal with plastic strips added to the top and bottom.

The phone comes with capacitive keys and a physical home button that also has a fingerprint sensor built into it. Apart from that, there is a headphone jack and micro USB charging port at the bottom edge. Like the previous generation On and J series phones, Samsung has once again placed a speaker on the right edge so the sound doesn’t get muffled while playing games.

Question: How is the Galaxy On7 Prime build quality?

Answer: Samsung has ensured that the phone feels solid in hand. There are no flexes on the device.

Question: Is Galaxy On7 Prime Water resistant?

Answer: No, the On7 Prime is not water resistant.

Question: Are Galaxy On7 Prime capacitive buttons backlit?

Answer: No. They are not. The hardware keys are silver coated.

Question: How is the Galaxy On7 Prime display?

Answer: In this phone, Samsung has packed a 5.5-inch Full HD TFT LCD display, which compares well to the competition available in the same budget. The display has16:9 aspect ratio and appears to be well calibrated. It’s vibrant and bright. The whites tend to lean towards slightly warmer tones which I don’t mind considering most phones at this price tends to lean towards bluish tone.

Question: Does Galaxy On7 Prime have the option to switch between color modes?

Answer: Like most Samsung LCD display smartphones, this one too doesn’t come with an option to choose between colour modes.

Question: Does the Galaxy On7 Prime have a Bluelight filter?

Answer: Nope.

Question: Does Galaxy On7 Prime has the option for automatic brightness?

Answer: No, automatic brightness feature is not available on the Galaxy On7 Prime.

Question: How is the day-to-day or general performance? How is gaming performance of Galaxy On7 Prime?

Answer: Samsung has once again flogging its old horse Exynos 7870 Octa-Core processor to do the heavy lifting. It is paired with a 3GB or 4GB RAM (based on the model you choose). We have the 4GB variant with us which managed to perform most tasks without any visible lag. It managed to load app quickly and there appears to be no problem with basic multitasking.

The phone is not exactly a gaming phone but games are playable on this devices. We tested Asphalt 8 on the device with the highest setting on and we managed to finish few races. The race controls were good but there were visible frame drops which hammed our gaming experience. However, when we tweaked settings to medium game play was smooth without any frame drops.

Question: Does Galaxy On7 Prime have heating issues?

Answer: No it doesn’t.

Galaxy On7 Prime Camera

Question: How is the Galaxy On7 Prime camera quality?

Answer: The budget mobile phone from Samsung boasts of decent optics at least on paper. The phone gets a 13-megapixel sensor on both front and the back along with f/1.9 aperture which, theoretically, should help it click decent images in poor lighting.

The phone manages to take decent clicks more often than not but you need a steady hand or tripod to get the best results indoors. In tricky lighting, the camera (sometimes) tends to oversharp images which reduce the amount of detail. But many-a-times it surprised us with the quality indoor images as well. In favorable conditions, the images turned out well.

Overall, the camera performance is comparable to other phones in this price segment. It’s slightly inconsistent, though.

Question: How is the selfie camera on Galaxy On7 Prime?

Answer: Well, Samsung does a better job with selfies. The selfies we took with the Galaxy On7 Prime were better than some of its contemporaries. The selfies camera’s dynamic ranges appear to be well balanced as it was able to differentiate between highlights and shadows.

Question: Can the Galaxy On7 Prime shoot Full HD videos?

Answer: Yes. It can.

Question: Can you record slow-motion videos on Galaxy On7 Prime?

Answer: No. There is an option for time lapse videos, though.

Galaxy On7 Prime Software

Question: How is the software on the Galaxy On7 Prime?

Answer: The Galaxy On7 Prime comes running on Android 7.1.1 Nougat based operating system with Experience UI 8.5 layered on top. Every year we see a ‘designed for India’ innovation integrated with Samsung’s UI like the Samsung App locker, bike mode, ultra power-saving mode and a few others.

With the Galaxy On7 Prime, we get Samsung Mall. This new feature will basically integrate multiple online shopping platforms into one. It also has the option to use Bixby Vision’s visual search algorithm for shopping. That is to say, you can shoot a product using your phone’s camera and it will search that product on Amazon, Tata Cliq, Jabong and Shopclues for you.

It can recognise products across categories. Currently, the Mall is in its initial stage and it is not entirely accurate with product searches. Samsung believes its machine learning will improve search results as we move along.

The phone also comes with Bixby and Samsung Pay Mini which further adds value. All in all, the Samsung’s Experience UI is one of the most feature-rich interfaces in the market today.

Question: Can you run dual apps or two apps with the same account on Galaxy On7 Prime?

Answer: Yes. You can.

Question: Will Galaxy On7 Prime get Android 8.0 Oreo update?
