Micromax owes a lot to it Canvas series phones which played a pivotal role in establishing the Indian smartphone maker as a prominent brand. The company sold millions of Canvas 4 devices however, it didn’t lived up to the hype which was created with high octane marketing strategy. Perhaps due to the bashing it received from tech geeks, Micromax digressed to other flagship brandings (Canvas Knight, Canvas Turbo, Canvas Sliver…).

After a long gap, Micromax has finally decided to reinstate its Canvas flagship series with Canvas 5. Let’s get a closer look at its specs and answer some of the frequently asked questions.

Question: How is the display on Micromax Canvas 5?

Answer: Micromax Canvas 5 features a 5.2-inch Full HD IPS display. In default black theme black color looks immaculate without any artifacts or grain marks. We tried different viewing angle and have to say it didn’t disappoint us. Under the sun, text on the screen was quite readable so full marks to Micromax for that.

Question: Does the display support gorilla glass protection?

Answer: Micromax Canvas 5 does feature a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. However, we recommend you to buy a screen protector to keep it scratch free in longer run.

Question: How is the design and build?

Answer: Micromax has paid lot more attention to design and build quality in Canvas 5 development and that really reflects on the phone. The Canvas 5 features a metal frame that complements the 2.5D touch panel on the top. Kudos to Micromax for trimming bezels on the sides of the screen to bare minimum, however, we wish we could use the same phrase to describe bezel on the top and bottom of the screen.

At the rear end, Canvas gets to wear a faux leather back cover (Faux leather used to be cool in 2013, but frankly, had been done to death ever since and feels clichéd and tacky now).

Question: Are the capacitive keys backlit?

Answer: This Micromax flagship device doesn’t have any capacitive keys so backlit keys are out of question. Canvas 5 features on screen controls for navigation.

Question: What kind of SIM card does it accept?

Answer: Micromax Canvas supports dual micro SIM cards.

Question: How much internal storage space is free? Can Apps be moved to SD card on Micromax Canvas 5?

Answer: At the time of first boot, we got 9.31GB usable space out of total 16 gigs.

Answer: Yes, it does come with USB OTG support.

Answer: On day-to-day usage, we didn’t face any issue with the performance on Micromax Canvas 5. The handset handles everything very well.

Question: Does Micromax Canvas 5 have heating issues?

Answer: In last 10 day, we didn’t notice any signs of alarming heating issue. However, while rendering high end games it does get warmed up.

Question: How much RAM is free on first boot?

Answer: Out of 3 GB RAM, 2.1 GB was free on the first boot.

Question: How is the Micromax Canvas 5 camera?

Answer:  The Micromax Canvas 5 features a 13 MP rear camera with PDAF which we found does a decent job. The amount of details and colors captured by this rear shooter are just about manageable. In low light conditions, image quality suffers a bit. However, we liked the selfie quality on 5MP front shooter which is assisted by a flash. The selfie camera software is a bit aggressive with noise reduction, and though the end results aren’t very accurate, you will like what you see.

Answer: We were pleased with over all Call quality in our area.

Question: How is the Battery backup on Micromax Canvas 5?

Answer: Battery performance is average. We got decent screen on time despite being a heavy user. Most basic users can easily draw a day and half juice from it.

Answer: No, even though you can open the back cover, you are not allowed to remove battery. Doing so, will void your warranty.

Answer: Canvas 5 hardware is all cool, but it is the software which drags it down in our opinion. Micromax is using Android 5.1 Lollipop based ROM with a customized launcher and set of preloaded apps. Icons and launcher customizations aren’t pretty but you can always fix that using third party launchers. Overall the software feels half baked.

Answer: Yes, Micromax Canvas 5 does support off-screen gestures. Users can access Camera, Music, and Flashlight by drawing C, M and O respectively without unlocking the device. (You cannot enable selective gestures, it’s an all or none deal)

Answer: The speakers on Micromax Canvas 5 are capable of producing decent sound. We found them audible enough in noisy ambient conditions.

Overall, it has a good build quality and decent hardware. However, sluggish Camera and buggy OS refrains to achieve its true potential.
