Smartphones in today’s times are no longer a luxury. They have become a necessity. Whether it is a school-going student, a working professional, a housewife or an elderly person, almost everyone uses smartphones to stay in touch with the world around them. However, while using smartphones no one can think of how that very device can take away his/her life.

In a tragic incident in Kerala, an 8-Year-Old Schoolgirl named Adithyasree died after her mobile phone exploded in her hand. The victim was a student of class 3 and lived in Thrissur district of Kerala. She was reportedly watching cartoons at night when the mobile exploded in her hand killing her on the spot. The minor is the daughter of a former block panchayat member and her grandmother was with her at home, when the incident took place. The time of the incident is reported to be around 10:30 PM on Monday, informed by the Press Trust of India.

The police claim that the overheating of the battery might be the reason for the explosion due to prolonged use of the device. However, the police are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion. It will only be known after a forensic examination of the mobile phone is done.

“The blast impact was heavy. Her right palm and face suffered serious injuries. Neighbors also said the sound was also very high,” said a senior police official who also added that an accidental death case was registered.

The police have also gotten to know that the minor girl used to watch cartoons frequently and the duration increased as the school vacation had begun. The relatives of the victim informed that the mobile phone was purchased 3 years ago and its battery was replaced 3 months ago.

The inspector also claimed that minor explosions of mobile phone batteries were reported earlier as well, but that was a rare incident.

While one can’t control what’s not in their hands, following a few safety rules while using smartphones or other devices, might just help in saving lives. These include not using the mobile phone when it is charging, using headphones or earbuds for long conversations, keeping mobile devices away from the body when not in use, turning off WiFi when not in use, and avoiding taking calls at low reception areas.
