Philips is a consumer durable brand that people of all ages are familiar with. At least in the Indian market, where a wide variety of products ranging from grooming kits to kitchen appliances and from lightings to vacuum cleaner retail under the Phillips umbrella. A couple of years back, TP Vision Global licensed Philips brand name for TVs, professional displays, audio systems, and accessories.

In May 2019, Philips expanded its TV portfolio with the introduction of its 6100 Series. This  Smart TV series includes – 55PUT6103S and 50PUT6103S models available in 55-inch and 50-inch screen sizes, priced at Rs 79,990 and Rs 66,990 respectively. Recently, Philips has slashed their prices heavily as they are now available on Amazon for Rs 47,999 (buy) and Rs 39,999 (buy), respectively.

We have been testing the 55-inch option from the 6100-Series for the last month trying to ascertain if this is an option worth buying. Let’s discuss its pros and cons in our detailed Philips 55PUT6103S Smart TV review:

Philips 55PUT6103S Review: Design

Philips has kept things fairly simple and the TV has a distraction-free functional design. Although you will see ‘Ultra Slim Smart LED’ in its name but it isn’t anywhere close to being ultraslim. The thickness increases in concentric layers, which makes the TV appear slim from the front.

TP Vision has persisted with the tried and tested for the 55PUT6103S, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The TV sits more assuringly on our tabletop as compared to the VU Pixelight (review) that we reviewed last month.

Bezels on the front are fairly narrow and there’s a narrow black frame between bezel and screen which helps a viewer stay focused on the screen content. The Philips logo sticks out at the bottom. The lower bottom is expectedly heftier and the TV can be wall-mounted or can be placed on the tabletop by fixing detachable stands (which is bundled in the box).

The ports on the back should be accessible after you wall mount the TV, but not without struggle. One set of ports, at the bottom, is in a tiny alcove and we couldn’t connect peripherals like FireTV without using the extender. Ports that you’d need to access more frequently are right facing and a lot more accessible.

All in all, the Philips 4K TV is quite sturdy and looks decent enough. We didn’t stumble into any design flaws that hampered our viewing experience.

Philips 55PUT6103S TV Review: Ports and connectivity

The Philips 55PUT6103S TV has an almost full array of connectivity ports and options. It includes three HDMI ports, two USB ports, dated audio-video input-output ports, digital audio out, a 3.5mm port for analog audio and Lan port.

Among the left-facing ports, there’s one HDMI port, USB port, and a 3.5mm port. All other ports are facing downwards and are housed in a cutout. Here you’ll find 2 HDMI port, one of which supports ARC (Audio Return Channel). This should be your preferred port to connect soundbars, streaming dongles or perhaps other devices you wish to operate with your TV remote. Other ports in the recess include an Antenna port, Digital Audio Out, LAN port, and one USB Port.

It is worth pointing out that the HDMI 1 only supports 4K signals at 30Hz, so if you are planning to connect gaming consoles or Blu-ray players, use HDMI 2 or HDMI 3 port as they support 4K@60Hz.

The Philips 4K HDR TV also supports dual-band WIFI, and WIFI direct for internet connectivity.

So, as far as connectivity goes, the Philips Series-6100 has you well covered.

Philips 55PUT6103S TV Review: UI, Software, and Remote

At a time when most budget brands are lining up to for Android TV, Philips comes with its own Linux-based Saphi OS in Series 6100 TVs. The interface here doesn’t look as polished as Android TVs or LG Web OS. To be fair, it is functional and doesn’t take much time to understand.

The Saphi interface comes with a number of pre-loaded apps including Youtube, Netflix, Prime Videos and Eros Now. Hotstar and Zee5 are not pre-installed and they are not available on the Philips app store.

We were able to stream 4K HDR content on Amazon Prime Videos and on Netflix. App switching is neat. The current media/ app keeps playing and app options show up as an overlay.

Smart connectivity options such as Miracast and SimplyShare are also supported.

The Philips 4K LED TV comes with a regular remote that has a dedicated button for Netflix (but not for Prime Videos). Unlike Bluetooth remotes, Philips Remote is IR based and only works with a clear line of sight to the TV.

Philips 55PUT6103S TV Review: Display, Picture Quality, and Performance

Let’s get to the real business end of this review. For this review, we had our TV connected to the TATA SKY HD setup box, Amazon FireStick 4K, and LG Blu-ray player. We also test 4K HDR content playback via USB drive.

We played all sorts of content on the TV, from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in HDR to another Amazon Orignal The Family Man in full HD. Obviously, HDR content appeared the best on Philips TV with good color reproduction and better than expected blacks.

The 4K TV showed good variation in colors with a wide dynamic range – something that was easily discernible while watching Bard of Blood on Netflix.

TP Vision has managed to ensure that the screen is not that reflective and is sufficiently bright. During the day time, we get a good amount of Sunlight in our room and even then we are able to watch content on the screen without any trouble. The contrast levels are good thanks to 6400 micro dimming zones. No, black isn’t equivalent to OLEDs but they are certainly better than what we usually see in this price range.

While watching 4K content, everything looked crisp. It has options for Noise Reduction and no, there is no variable refresh rate support.

Philip’s motion processing is basically a motion interpolation technique of adding additional fill frames to ensure motion looks smooth. This works fairly well with UHD content.

Upscaling full HD content wasn’t a problem either. In fact, it worked better than my expectations. Full HD+ videos looked crips and the TV was able to manage colors and contrast while playing scaled content. The Philips TV also did a decent job of upscaling DVD feed coming through our Blu-ray player.

Philips 55PUT6103S TV Review: Sound

The Philips 55PUT6103S is equipped with 20W stereo speakers. This is at par with what you usually get in the budget and we found the audio to be adequate. The vocals were clear and crisp so we had no issue understanding dialogues. Having said that, if you are gunning for a more cinematic experience you will naturally have to pair your TV with a more versatile soundbar or speaker system.

Philips 55PUT6103S TV Review

The Philips 55-inch 6100 series TV makes a lot more sense at its new under Rs 50,000 price. It will be competing with the likes of Xiaomi, Motorola, TCL and VU TVs in this segment and can comfortably stand its ground.

Display brightness is better than Mi 4 Pro, colors and upscaling are reasonably good, and there is a rich set of connectivity options at disposal. The software needs work, and Philips 55PUT6103S isn’t particularly high on style quotient, it has the basics covered and does outperform rivals in its price segment.

Pros

  • Deep Blacks
  • Good Color variations
  • Decent motion handling
  • Decent set of connectivity options

Cons

  • Limited App Support
  • No built-in chromecast
  • Outmoded Remote
