Samsung’s Galaxy M20 is an aggressive take on India’s affordable smartphone market. It’s certainly good news that the biggest Android phone maker is finally pushing itself, and it’s not the specs but the experience that makes Galaxy M20 (review) stand out. There are numerous things that click about the phone and lend it that elusive premium appeal, so uncommon in the budget segment. Without wasting more time, let’s talk about 5 exciting features that impressed us.

1. Enchanting Display

Another noteworthy highlight of the Galaxy M20 is its gorgeous 6.3-inch Infinity-V display. The bezels around the screen are extremely narrow and you also get a trendy (and well optimized) water-drop notch, which is still quite rare in this price segment.

Quality-wise, the M20 has one of the better-calibrated displays in its class. You get vivid colors that pop and great viewing angles. The brightness levels are well balanced and it’s a joy to consume multimedia content on the screen.

2. Well-designed Software

The well-designed software proves to be a major strength. The Chinese competition mostly has half-baked iOS-like experience to offer, which simply doesn’t cut it.

The Experience UI on the M20, on the other hand, has been optimized for use with mid-range hardware and also borrows design elements and animations from the new One UI. It’s a well thought out skin that’s easy to navigate and is a pleasure to live with.

3. Lock Screen Stories

One of the things that stands out in the Galaxy M20 is the new lock screen feature, powered by Glance.

These lock screen stories are a slick way of keeping yourself updated with whatever’s happening around you, without putting in any extra effort. Besides, you get a fresh look each time you unlock your phone, without having to work for it. This is a default feature which displays new articles from many content categories on your lockscreen. You can customize the content that you want to appear on the lockscreen by tapping on Follow categories under Settings and picking the content of your choice.

[Note: Samsung is not on the only one that has brought this feature to their lock screen. The Glance app is appearing on many existing Xiaomi models as well].

4. USB Type-C Port and Fast charging

The Galaxy M20 is one of the rare few affordable phones to offer a reversible USB Type-C port, which is to say you don’t have to bother with which side goes up or down and can simply plug the charging cord. This simple convenience has somehow steered clear of affordable phones up until 2019.

The same also goes for fast charging. The Galaxy M20 supports fast charging and Samsung also bundles a 15W fast charger in the box that can even fast charge its high-end phones.

5. HD Streaming

HD and Full HD have been standard display resolutions even on entry-grade Android phones for a few years. Yet, most (almost all) affordable phones do not support HD content streaming on apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime.

This is because many phones lack Widevine DRM L1 certificate that these services require for pushing HD content securely. Even when a few phones do have DRM L1 certificate, they are not whitelisted in the database of these services.

The Galaxy M20 fulfills all criteria and is perhaps the only affordable phone to truly support HD streaming on apps like Netflix and Prime Videos.

Apart from these stand-out features that we have talked about, there are numerous big and small tidbits to be excited about including the dual rear cameras, dedicated card slot, Dual 4G VoLTE support, and the long lasting battery. All said and done, the Galaxy M20 is a big leap forward as far as affordable Samsung phones go.
