All major announcements of 2017 are over and it has been a stellar year for the sector as a whole. We have seen some exciting announcement and some much-hyped launches which turned out to be bogus.

In 2017, the bezel-less display prove to be instant hit formula. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are two other phrases that we came across way too often during the launch presentations.

With a new smartphone launching almost every other day it really becomes tough to keep a tab of each and every phone. We must have seen most of these phones there were some of them which stood more than the most. Amongst all the phones launched in 2017, these are 10 exciting phones that truly stood out.

Best phones money can buy in 2017 – 2018

Google Pixel 2/ Pixel 2 XL

If you have the budget and looking to buy best camera phone then the Google’s second generation phones are a perfect buy. Google’s sensational devices currently have the best rated mobile camera’s on DxOMark.

The Pixel 2 XL is slightly more expensive between the two and sports 18:9 display with minimum bezels. However, few eyebrows have been raised on the Pixel 2 display but despite that the Pixel 2 XL is an excellent device in the premium category with this stock Android Oreo OS, AI smarts and excellent cameras.

On the hardware front, the Pixel 2 (review) and XL are equally well equipped as both features a Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip, 4GB RAM and 64GB/128GB storage.

Apple iPhone X

The iPhone X is the tenth-anniversary edition that Apple touts as the “Best iPhone Ever”. The tenth generation iPhone overhauls design and boasts of edge-to-edge display with a notch that accommodates various sensors for Face ID.

It sports a 5.8-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2436X1125 pixels. For this phone, Apple has developed A11 Bionic chipset which is based on 64-bit ARMv8-A six-core CPU and aided by motion M11 co-processor. The iPhone X also boasts of dual rear cameras (12-megapixel wide angle + 12-megapixel telephoto lens) with effective portrait mode and lighting mode.

Its 7-megapixel selfie camera can shoot portrait shots as well. Overall, the iPhone X is a treat for Apple loyalists.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

This incredibly impressive phablet from Samsung thicks most boxes. The Galaxy Note 8 (review) has a scintillating display, offers very good low light camera performance, retains 3.5mm audio jack, is IP68 water resistant certified, and supports fast wireless charging. Amongst all this, its biggest advantage is the S Pen which offers few very intriguing features.

The device not just scores well on aesthetics but also on productivity and performance. It’s a powerful device driven by Exynos 8895 chipset coupled with 6Gigs of RAM. Best Phones Under Rs. 40,000 in India 2017-2018

OnePlus 5T/ OnePlus 5

Looking for flagship experience under 40K budget? Look no further than the OnePlus 5T (review). The “T”-upgrade to the OnePlus 5 (review) now comes with facial recognition and a 6-inch 18:9 Optic AMOLED display with full HD+ resolution.

Rest of the story is same as the OnePlus 5. It has a premium metal body, Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC with 6GB/8GB RAM under the hood and a price tag that will make most of its competitors feel jittery.

Oh Yes, the camera optics have also changed (not sure for good or bad). OnePlus has ditched telephoto lens from its dual rear cameras set up for a monochrome one which now lets you capture better lowlight images but now you won’t get the 1.4X optical zoom.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 (review) wins hearts with its elegant design where its ceramic back and all display front will mesmerize you. It proves that Xiaomi can compete with others in the aesthetics game.

Apart from its whopping 80.8% screen-to-body ratio, the phone also boasts of impressive hardware. It too ropes in Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC with 6GB/8GB RAM.

Camera performance is where it falls short of the competition. Firstly, it has an odd placement of the selfie camera. Moreover, the images captured by Mi Mix 2 don’t really impress.

LG G6

The LG G6 is another impressive phone that made its debut in 2017 but its badly dented by its hefty price tag. After the first few price cuts, the LG G6 has been a good phone to buy under Rs. 35,000.

Launched at MWC 2017, the  LG G6 packs top-notch specification and premium built. It flaunts a large 5.7-inch display pack with QHD resolution to ensure its a visual treat. As far as innards are concerned, LG has sourced a Snapdragon 821 and 4GB of RAM to power lift it.

In optics, it offers rear dual cameras set up where the second lens is a wide angle a lens which lets you squeeze in more people for a groupie.  Apart from this, the phone also has very good audio capabilities.

Top 3 phones under Rs 20,000 in 2017 – 2018

Xiaomi Mi A1

Xiaomi’s first ever stock Android smartphone was very well received by customers. The ‘created by Xiaomi and powered by Google’ phone has a lot going for it. It offers a full metal body, decent full HD display, effective dual camera setup with 2X optical Zoom and portrait mode.

The Mi A1 (review) enthralls on the power-efficient Snapdragon 625 mobile platform paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Xiaomi recently announced Android Oreo beta program for Mi A1 which suggests Oreo update coming soon.

Nokia 6

The Nokia 6 (FAQ) was one of the first full metal unibody phones available under 15K. The phone looks gorgeous, has a good looking IPS display, and well-optimized stock software.

However, on performance and camera front, it falls short of Mi A1. It’s limited 32GB storage (22GB free at user end) and hybrid SIM are other peeve points.

Vivo V7 and Vivo V7+

The Vivo V7 (review) and V7+ (review) are two phones that should appeal to most selfie-crazy people. Both these phones boast of trendy 18:9 displays but also comes with fast face unlock feature.

Both these mid-range phones are light, compact and very ergonomic. There are no physical navigation buttons and it relies on on-screen buttons or gestures perform various functions. Both devices are powered by Snapdragon 450 chipset.

Best phones under Rs 10,000 in 2017 – 2018

 Xiaomi Redmi Series (Note 4 / Redmi 4 / Redmi 4A)

Xiaomi has been ruling the roost when it comes to under 10K smartphones. Be it Redmi Note 4 (review), Redmi 4 (faq) or Redmi 4A – All have been selling like hot cakes and for a reason. 

The Redmi Note 4, as per Xiaomi, is the number one selling smartphones in India. The Note 4 is powered by Snapdragon 625 processor paired with 2GB, 3GB, and 4GB RAM options. The reasonable full HD display, fast fingerprint sensor, and the long-lasting battery are its biggest strengths.

The Redmi 4 (FAQ), on the other hand, is slightly more compact, has a less power Snapdragon 430 chipset at the heart with 2GB/3GB/ 4GB. The Redmi 4A has an identical design and offers a decent performance for an entry segment device.
