The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 is companys first Android-powered device. But being first is not always a good thing. You have to face some serious initial expectations and justify them. That is the best case scenario. But obviously Sony Ericsson havent read that script. Even now, several months after our two X10 previews, there are still some final touches needed.
That put aside, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 is a promising device with (mostly) bright future waiting for it. read more →
- Quad-band GSM and tri-band 3G support
- 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 2 Mbps HSUPA support
- 4" capacitive touchscreen of WVGA (480 x 854 pixel) resolution and scratch-resistant surface
- 16M-color ready (65K effective colors under Android OS v1.6)
- Android OS v1.6 with complete Sony Ericsson UI customization
- No DivX and XviD video playback
- No smart dialing
- Limited storage available to the user on the system partition (you are left with only 512 MB for installing apps)
- No secondary video-call camera (or videocalling whatsoever)
- No free GPS navigation solution
So where does the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 stand after the update? It didnt quite manage to take over at the top of the smartphone food chain, but to be honest we never actually expected it to. One year is a really long time in this business and understandably competitors havent been standing still.
With Eclair virtually all the functionality is already there and compatibility with Android Market apps has been expanded greatly. read more →

Even in 2010, high-powered Android devices are still surprisingly difficult to come by. Thing is, it's not just about the hardware; when it comes to Android, unless you buy a so-called "Google Experience" device, it's never going to be about the hardware alone. Any company that tries to aggressively skin a mobile platform is going to have issues -- possibly major ones -- on its first iteration. That's a pretty unavoidable reality of engineering, and it's a growing pain that both Blur and Sense have gone through (in fact, you could argue that Blur's still in the thick of that fight). read more →
- Huge display
- Comfortable to hold
- Good camera
- Runs Android 1.6, no upgrade for a while
- Lots of plastic
- Custom UI is an acquired taste
When we first reviewed the X10, it had a lot more going for it. But now we have to look at it from the context in which it was released: a smartphone arguably over the hill before it even set ground in Ma Bell, retailing for $150 on contract. For just $50 more you can get the Samsung Captivate, arguably an improved version of this form factor in almost every way (screen, Android OS version, hardware). For $50 less, there's the iPhone 3GS equipped with iOS 4 -- and that's all assuming you're committed to AT&T. read more →
- Large display
- Good camera
- Comfortable to hold
- Runs Android 1.6, no upgrade for a while
- Custom UI still lags, no multitouch
- Too pricey given competition
We were quietly confident that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 would be a front-running phone when we first heard about it - a complete Android overhaul and some top end specs were enough to have us drooling.
Then the phone came in for review, and we were disappointed. Laggy software, only Android 1.6 and a somewhat baffling system made it hard to see what had happened with Sony Ericsson - but there was hope with the Android 2.1 upgrade on the horizon. read more →
