Sony Ericsson Xperia ray review: Ray of light

Almost nothing went missing when Sony Ericsson turned the magnification down to change the arc into the ray. The HDMI port was dropped out, which is a pity. Had the Xperia ray been able to pair with an HDTV, the screen size would've been irrelevant.

Not everything that's the same on paper is the same in real life though - the 8MP camera of the Xperia ray isn't as good as the one on the arc. It's still pretty good, so we'll let this one slide. read more →

  • Quad-band GSM /GPRS/EDGE support
  • 3G with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
  • 3.3" 16M-color capacitive LED-backlit LCD touchscreen of FWVGA resolution (480 x 854 pixels) on Sony Mobile BRAVIA engine
  • Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread
  • 1 GHz Scorpion CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 chipset
  • Screen viewing angles could have been better
  • No smart dialing
  • Loudspeaker has below average performance
  • No DivX/XviD support
  • Non hot-swappable memory card

The power of the Xperia Arc in a small and sleek chassis

There is no doubt about it – never mind a rabbit, Sony Ericsson has pulled a gem out of the hat here. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray is a joy to use (for 99% of tasks) and we're seriously impressed with the form factor and how it's squeezed it all in.

The only issue we have is that the remaining 1% of tasks that are less pleasurable to do with the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray (typing on the screen, for example) really do affect usage, so this is a handset you should try out before you buy. read more →

  • Great battery life
  • Truly amazing screen
  • Blisteringly fast web browser with Flash
  • Quick GPS action
  • 8MP camera with HD video
  • Keyboard can be fiddly
  • Camera a bit of a letdown
  • Timescape erratic
  • Maximum of five home screens available
  • Office Suite should be pro version

Sony Ericsson Xperia ray Review

To summarize our impressions from the tiny phone – it is tempting to dismiss the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray as a less-capable version of the Xperia arc, but what you get is in fact a more compact variant, without sacrificing much but an HDMI port. Actually, the fact that the 8MP Exmor R camera didn't perform as well as we expected, and also that the LED on the back has to be used as a light instead of automatic camera flash, are the only letdowns we experienced with the Xperia ray. read more →

  • High pixel density display
  • Design-conscious chassis
  • Good loudspeaker
  • Dual mics for noise-cancellation and stereo sound capture
  • Camera could be better
  • LED light doesn't serve as automatic flash
