A year ago it seemed Sony Ericssons lack of inspiration was becoming chronic. With delayed updates and boring uniform looks the XPERIA lineup was going nowhere.
The XPERIA Arc is a big part of that probably the most important part of the plan. The Arc is Sony Ericssons first Gingerbread droid, the first to have the new Reality display and Sonys new Exmor R camera sensor. Theyve given it the best they have but the tech inside doesnt tell the whole story. read more →
- Quad-band GSM /GPRS/EDGE support
- 3G with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
- 4.2" 16M-color capacitive LED-backlit LCD touchscreen of FWVGA resolution (480 x 854 pixels) with Sony Mobile BRAVIA engine
- Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread
- 1 GHz Scorpion CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 chipset
- Display has poor viewing angles
- No front-facing camera
- Main competitors have dual-core CPUs and better GPUs
- No smart dialing
- microSD card slot is not hot-swappable
Sony Ericsson could've called this the Xperia Art and no one would have been surprised. Its 4.2-incher is one of the most photogenic smartphones we've come across yet and its design exhibits an artistry and a flamboyance we rarely get to see. Construction materials might have been better, but then the Arc comes in at a very reasonable £425 ($680) price off contract -- placing it at the lower end of the Android smartphone pricing scale in the UK -- so some tradeoffs have to be expected. read more →
- Great camera
- Thin, light and beautiful
- Attractive UI atop Android 2.3
- Iffy ergonomics
- Disappointing video quality
- Some software issues
If you think 4.2 inches is too big for a mobile phone, the Arc will change your mind. The case is only a few millimetres larger than the HTC Desire, meaning you get all the benefits of having a huge display in a phone that doesn't feel unusually large.
Sony Ericsson's BRAVIA Engine feature is a mere novelty to pad out the spec sheet, but once you've held such a thin phone and seen it display apps and web sites on its enormous screen, anything smaller seems needlessly restrictive. read more →
- Astonishingly thin body
- Attractive user interface tweaks
- Nice customisable floating dock
- Single-core processor handles most tasks well
- Decent battery life
- Small, fiddly power and volume buttons
- Timescape widget is rather ugly
- Text entry system is a bit last generation
- Only five home screens
Wrapping up our review of the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc we have to say that the company seems to have nailed it this time. The thin arched profile makes you forget that you are holding a gadget with a huge 4.2” screen. On top of that it is very light thanks to its plastic build, and the tasteful design and chromed rim remains sleek and classy. We're extremely thankful that the company has endowed the handset with Gingerbread and simplified its Android skinning efforts, since this improves usability and should speed up the eventual OS updates. read more →

The latest version of Sony Ericsson's Arc Android smartphone gets a bump in processing speed and more multimedia content. read more →
