Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro review: HD gets a Pro flavor

Weve had plenty of positive things to say about the Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro and some not so positive. In the end, its how the pros and cons balance. It looks like a simple trade-off: still camera downgraded, QWERTY keyboard added. But hey, keeping the compact size is quite an achievement.

The hardware QWERTY is the obvious improvement over the vanilla Vivaz. The still cameras are in different leagues but the 5MP snapper on the Vivaz pro is very near the best in class and the 720p video capabilities havent suffered. read more →

  • Symbian OS 9.4 S60 5th, topped with a custom-brewed homescreen and media menu
  • 720 MHz CPU, PowerVR SGX dedicated graphics accelerator
  • Camera downgraded from 8MP on the regular Vivaz
  • No camera lens protection
  • The S60 5th edition UI isn't the best in usability
  • No auto locking of the screen during a call

Take one Vivaz, add a keyboard and suddenly, you're a pro

Part of the reason we delve into such depth in our mobile phone reviews is to make sure that users can get the right information on the phone they're about to buy, and don't get sucked in by specs.

That's sadly what a lot of people will do with the Vivaz Pro – not only will they be enamoured by a keyboard, but they will also love the sound of HD video recording. read more →

  • Phsyical keyboard
  • Decent music player
  • Compact design
  • Cheap casing
  • Laggy UI, Slow browser
  • Over-complicated menus

Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro Review

As a phone the Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro works well without being outstanding in terms of voice clarity or reception. People were hearing us well, but we had some trouble with voice clarity on our end. The ear speaker's quietness probably plays its part here too. The loudspeaker is strong and clear, but the included headset works the same as with the Vivaz - hard to hear and flat sounding, though it serves its purpose when used as a mike for recording video interviews and the like. read more →

  • Shoots HD video
  • Great design - small, light, fits perfectly in the hand
  • Ergonomic keyboard
  • Expensive
  • Average low light performance of the camera
  • Popular, but aged OS
  • No kinetic scrolling in menus and built-in browser
  • No preinstalled games

Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro

Though reasonably priced for a 720p video-shooting phone, the camera appears to be the only saving grace of this smartphone--unfortunately thanks to the stagnation of its Symbian OS.

Ultimately, the Vivaz pro will appeal only to those looking for a decent camera in their mobile phone. The Sony Ericsson doesn't really have much to offer as a smartphone because of the dearth of apps and an inconsistent interface. read more →

  • Fast camera
  • 720p video capture
  • compact and light
  • 3.5mm audio jack.
  • Inconsistent interface
  • dated Symbian OS
  • poor placement of power button.

Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro review

Overall, it’s hard to recommend this phone to anyone. It’s aimed at the younger crowd who like to record in HD video and share it with their friends – simply put, get a Samsung Wave and get a much better experience. For emailing, internet and even basic use this phone isn’t anywhere near the front of the pack, despite the high end price. read more →
