Sony Ericsson Vivaz review: Viv A-to-Z

Sony Ericsson have been limping on profits lately but their ambitions seem to not have suffered one bit. There is the Satio, now the Vivaz and with the XPERIA X10 on its way, the company is gaining a firm foothold in the high-end segment.

Some people scoff at the sight of Symbian but Sony Ericsson's work on the homescreen and their signature media menu, you can spend quite some time using the phone before you actually come down to the slightly off-putting S60 5th UI. read more →

  • 3.2" 16M-color resistive touchscreen of 640 x 360 pixel resolution
  • 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, face and smile detection, geotagging and touch focus
  • HD 720p video recording @ 24fps with continuous auto focus
  • Symbian OS 9.4 S60 5th, topped with a custom-brewed homescreen and media menu
  • 720 MHz CPU, PowerVR SGX dedicated graphics accelerator
  • No camera lens protection
  • No auto mode for the flash/video light
  • LED flash not powerful enough
  • The S60 5th edition UI isn't to the best in class standards
  • No proximity sensor sensor to lock the screen during a call

Sony Ericsson Vivaz

The Vivaz is no doubt a good specimen for showing what Sony Ericsson does best -- great video and photo capture along with a user-friendly media playback interface, not to mention being a world's first with its nice continuous auto-focus 720p video recording. On the other hand, though, the user interface needs some tweaking for the sake of mainly consistency, ease of web access, security (as in so the phone is less likely to unlock itself) and stability (and we hope a software patch will be offered to fix all these). read more →

  • Decent camera quality
  • 720p video capture with continuous autofocus
  • Intuitive media playback interface
  • Cheap plastic feel
  • Lack of consistency with interface elements
  • Buggy apps

Sony Ericsson Vivaz (AT&T)

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz is certainly capable, but trying to make it do anything is extremely frustrating. read more →

  • Sharp 8.1 megapixel camera with HD video
  • Small and light
  • Full Web browser.

HD video recording - but is it better than the Satio?

For a mid-to-high range feature phone, we were pleasantly surprised by how much we liked the Sony Ericsson Vivaz.

As a phone it performed well and we were impressed with the music player and camera functions – the main features of the phone. read more →

    • Nice feel and ergonomic design
    • Crisp LCD screen
    • Camera easy to use
    • HD video recording
    • Easy to set up
    • Can be slow and glitchy
    • Resistive screen
    • Poor app selection
    • Internet settings never remembered
    • Extremely unintuitive screen lock

    Sony Ericsson Vivaz Review

Similarly to the 600MHz processor of the Samsung OMNIA HD i8910 , the chip the Sony Ericsson Vivaz integrates is based on ARM’s famous Cortex A8 architecture, but runs at 720MHz instead. Moreover, its power is clearly felt at not just HD video playback, but while working with the handset interface and applications as well. However, the situation changes in a snap when the total size of all files stored onto the 8GB expansion card gets near 6GB - the Vivaz became increasingly unresponsive during our tests and to the point we thought it had frozen. read more →

    • Likeable, compact and light-weight
    • Brilliant at HD video playback
    • Saturated screen colors
    • Two camera shutters
    • Its display is almost unusable in direct sunlight
    • Mediocre snapshot quality
    • Gets extremely sluggish at times
    • The boxed headset pair is awful
    • Lacks built-in DivX and Xvid support
