Sony Ericsson Satio review: Shooter by vocation

Sony Ericsson need a winner right now and the Satio is the phone carrying the torch. It's equipped with a 12-megapixel camera, which puts it in an elite club. It failed to become the founding member of the club - that title goes to the Samsung Pixon12 - but the Satio offers a level of extra versatility available only on smartphones.

The Satio runs on the same "engine" as the iPhone 3GS, Omnia HD, Palm Pre and Nokia N900 - an ARM Cortex A8 CPU running at 600MHz along with a PowerVR SGX graphics accelerator. read more →

  • Symbian OS 9.4 with S60 5th edition UI, spiced up with a home-brewed homescreen and media menu
  • Xenon flash is not adequately powerful
  • The S60 5th edition UI isn't to the best in class standards
  • No 3.5mm audio jack or a standard USB port

Is the 12.1MP behemoth worthy of the year-long hype?

The Satio is a good phone, there's no doubt about that. The sheer amount of technology under the hood is testament to a good design team, and we can see a lot of photography lovers seeing it as their must-have phone.

However, the amount of little problems (as well as the big ones, like a poor touchscreen at times and no 3.5mm headphone jack) all add up quickly, and it's a shame as we wanted to Satio to be one of the biggest devices of the year. read more →

  • Clear and simple RSS reader
  • Poor battery life

Sony Ericsson Satio Review

Having told you what Sony Ericsson’s first 12-megapixel, all-in-one, Symbian S60 5th Edition based handset is all about, it’s time we passed our verdict. The only advantages of the Satio over its rivals are the almost impeccable in-call quality and splendid night shots. As a whole, the handset takes on the job of being a decent camera phone pretty well, but its arch-rival, the Samsung Pixon12 performs better. read more →

  • The second cell phone with 12MP camera
  • Great night snapshots
  • Extremely good in-call quality
  • Outdoor pictures could have been better
  • Unjustified price tag
  • Sluggish operational speed
  • No 3.5mm jack
  • Doesn’t support DivX and/or Xvid files

Sony Ericsson Satio review (Idou, black, unlocked)

The Sony Ericsson Satio packs in a lot of multimedia power, particularly in the camera department, but it also has a number of annoyances. You can get a better overall experience with other handsets and for a lot less. read more →

  • The Sony Ericsson Satio rocks a 12.1-megapixel camera with advanced editing options and video recording. The Symbian-based phone offers 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and full e-mail support. The Walkman-style music player is also a nice bonus.
  • The Satio uses Sony Ericsson's proprietary port for the USB connector and headset. The Web browser is a little clunky to navigate, and the Symbian user interface has some inconsistencies.

Sony Ericsson Satio

The Satio delivers great pictures and comes with many high-end features, but the inconsistent user interface of the platform mars the overall experience of the device.

While we'd want to fall in love with the Satio, in reality, we couldn't bring ourselves to. It's not so much due to the device, but the software it runs on. The S60 5th edition operating system is very capable and that's a point most people would agree on. read more →

  • Good image quality
  • RoadSync for synchronizing with Exchange server
  • large, vibrant touchscreen
  • Xenon and LED flashes
  • great Web browser
  • Proprietary audio/PC connector
  • no bundled 3.5mm adapter
  • inconsistent S60 5th edition user interface.
