The Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type marks a new beginning for the Series 40 platform. Maybe well see an all-touch S40 one day, maybe we wont. But the X3-02 is an excellent phone as it is, and a keypad this good can only be considered a plus.
Its about the same size and weight and its thinner (9.6mm vs. 9.9mm) but the screen has increased in size to 2.4 and grown sensitive to touch. Music is still in the limelight not with dedicated play/next/prev keys but with a media key and a handy touch menu. read more →
- Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
- Quad-band 3G with 10Mbps HSDPA and 2Mbps HSUPA
- Neat and well built, slim and lightweight, metal on the body
- 2.4" 256K-color resistive TFT QVGA touchscreen
- S40 6th edition UI
- Small screen (for a touch phone)
- No multitasking
- No GPS
- Fixed-focus camera
- No document viewer
The Nokia X3-02 Touch-and-Type combines quality hardware with a pleasant user experience, but suffers from a lackluster OS and finicky software. It's a decent enough feature phone for those who simply want a durable, and low-cost ($200 unsubsidized) device that focuses on core functionality and offers a few extras in a small and familiar package. But for those who also seek GPS, multitasking, or Exchange integration on a budget, it's too little, too late: there's a growing number of budget smartphones -- like the T-Mobile Comet and the Orange San Francisco -- that eclipse the X3-02 at the same price point. read more →

- No GPS or cell-based positioning
- Basic multitasking
- Text input via numeric keypad
The unlocked Nokia X3-02 is yet another model in a long line of capable, unlocked Nokia cell phones that few Americans need or want; if you're one of the few target customers, Nokia offers much better options. read more →
- Attractive and lightweight
- Solid call quality
- Easy to use one-handed
- Good camera and music player.
Nokia hasn't really done a great deal that's wrong with the Nokia X3 Touch and Type. Making the S40 operating system touch aware breathes a bit more life into it, and there are some very positive features such as long battery life and good build quality.
But at this pricepoint, the competition is fierce. Android already has its place firmly staked out, and we think it can only push Nokia harder as time rolls on. read more →
- Long battery life
- Good camera
- Small and light
- Good build
- Wi-Fi
- Strange keyboard layout
- S40 feels old hat and out of touch
- Screen is too small for quality web browsing
- Much touted music features don't blow us away
- Video streaming jerky
To sum up, we thoroughly enjoyed our time with the Nokia X3-02. It is a truly innovative Series 40 phone that mixes cool ergonomics with a wonderfully affordable price tag and good overall styling. The touch screen implementation only enhances usability and it is clear that Nokia made a concerted effort to make connectivity a primary concern. In turn, if you're looking for something more affordable than a smartphone that can still manage your email and surf the web, and can get past the keypad layout, the Nokia X3-02 comes recommended. read more →
