Nokia N97 mini review: Less is more

The Nokia N97 mini is a very versatile full-featured device, nicely balanced with with hardly any serious holes in its specs sheet. What's best about it, is that "mini" moniker is certainly not a negative one. The N97 mini is in the size range of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and it's in fact thinner despite the slide out keyboard.

What's good about the relatively new OS edition is that the Ovi Store is really picking up speed, which is great news for the N97 mini. read more →

  • Symbian OS 9.4 with S60 5th edition UI with kinetic scrolling
  • Slide-out three-row full QWERTY keyboard
  • ARM 11 434MHz CPU and 128 MB of RAM
  • The S60 touch UI is still inconsistent
  • Outdated camera interface and features
  • No DivX or XviD video support out-of-the-box

Nokia N97 mini (Unlocked)

The Nokia N97 mini is an improvement over the original N97, and the free Ovi Maps GPS app rocks. But there's still not enough here to pull U.S. buyers away from other smart devices. read more →

  • Smaller, lighter, and cheaper than the N97
  • Powerful camera and multimedia performance
  • Free Ovi Maps GPS navigation.

Slick version of Nokia flagship phone arrives to upstage its big brother

The Nokia N97 Mini is a decent device with plenty of features going for it, a good quality performance and build, and a very usable QWERTY keyboard to complement its hefty amount of onboard functionality. The 'Mini' label hasn't shaved a huge amount off the price tag though - it's £429 SIM-free at launch, with the N97 currently £449.

Despite scaling down some features, however, the N97 Mini is possibly more attractive as a pocket QWERTY-packing smartphone handset than its N97 big brother. read more →

    • Decent QWERTY keyboard
    • Large 3.2-inch display
    • Wi-Fi and HSDPA
    • A-GPS built in
    • Good music player
    • Resistive display
    • S60 5th Edition Relatively bulky
    • Wi-Fi could be easier to set up
    • Camera flash has limited effect

    Nokia N97 mini Review

In terms of operational speed and system stability, the Nokia N97 mini performs better than the N97. The phone doesn’t freeze or restart for no reason, but lags and responds to commands just as sluggishly. The smaller N97, however, is a much better at phone calls and the in-call quality it offers is superior to what is elder sibling delivers. Sound is loud and clear, even if voices tend to get slightly monotonous and sharp at times. read more →

    • Good build quality
    • Compact size
    • Good in-call quality
    • Fast text entry with the QWERTY keyboard
    • Slow operational speed
    • Nothing new about the interface
    • Limited video codec support

    Nokia N97 Mini review (unlocked)

The Nokia N97 Mini is a more stable and better designed device than the bigger N97, but its Achilles' heel remains as the confusing user interface keeps it behind today's leading touch-screen smartphones. read more →

    • The Nokia N97 Mini improves on the design of the N97 with a smaller size and a more solid construction. Performance is also better and you now get free voice-guided navigation via Ovi Maps. The smartphone continues to offer a full range of wireless options, e-mail capabilities, and a 5-megapixel camera.
    • The user interface still has inconsistencies, making the phone frustrating and confusing to use. The phone's Web browser is a bit clunky to navigate and there's limited support for video codecs.
