It's an Nseries device we are talking about and we can't complain about looks. How's that for a nice start? Now seriously, the Nseries are back on track and we don't mean that as a mere comparison to the misfiring N96. All-in-one is the game and the N97 is ready to take charge of the Nokia multimedia squad. It has an arsenal full of (almost) all contemporary high-end weapons and Symbian smartness securing its rear.

- Slide-n-tilt 3.5" 16M-color resistive touchscreen of 640 x 360 pixel resolution
- 5 megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash and lens cover (VGA@30fps video recording)
- Symbian OS 9.4 with S60 5th edition UI
- Slide-out three-row full QWERTY keyboard
- ARM 11 434MHz CPU and 128 MB of RAM
- The S60 5th edition UI still has poor ergonomics and is not as thumbable as expected
- Camera features are so two-thousand-and-late
- No DivX or XviD support out-of-the-box
- No smart dialing
- Somewhat limited 3rd party software availability
Needless to say, the attention to detail on this phone's construction was not lost on me. The keyboard -- a major concern for everyone prior to launch with the left-aligned directional pad and right-aligned spacebar -- turns out to be a joy to use in practice, with plenty of tactile response, and I found that it really took me no time at all to get fast on it. In fact, it's as good of a landscape QWERTY keyboard as I've ever used on a phone. read more →
- Impressive hardware
- Loaded with high-end specs
- Did we mention the hardware?
- Unsubsidized price in the US
- ARM 11 CPU pathetic for flagship
- Packs all the charm of an STD without the perks
Nokia fans will see this as a definite upgrade from what's been offered before, and those that appreciate a decent form factor in a phone will definitely do so too.
But there's just too many annoying parts to the Nokia N97 to label it a classic, but if you're stuck with it for 18 months (at least) then you can at least take solace in the fact there are many, many worse handsets out there on the market to be imprisoned with. read more →
- Great touchscreen
- Solid build quality
- Impressive internal memory
- Dual flash LED 5MP camera
- Unpredictable OS
- Lack of video codec support
- Chunky design
- Underpowered processor
With the Nokia N97, the manufacturer brings their top range N-series into the realm of smart phone fashion that is called touch sensitive screens. The phone is also being introduced as a mobile computer, although it is far from being one. Computers should be able to cope with variety of tasks these days, because technology keeps pushing on and customer requirement follow suit. Both the 434 MHz ARM11 processor and 256 Mb ROM / 128 Mb RAM of the Nokia N97 deliver good operational speed, although the phone doesn’t feel any faster than other devices running the same operating system. read more →
- Large, beautiful screen with high sensitivity
- GPS is fast and trouble free
- Good audio quality
- Reliable, high quality sliding mechanism
- In-call quality is not good enough
- Lack of full Office support
- Limited support of video formats
While the Nokia N97 is packed with features and offers the freedom of an unlocked phone, its clunky touch interface, sky-high price tag, and outdated operating system make it hard to recommend when there are better touch-screen smartphones on the market. read more →
- The Nokia N97 features a touch screen, a full QWERTY keyboard, and 32GB of internal flash memory. The smartphone also offers 3G support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS and comes equipped with a 5-megapixel camera.
- The N97's touch user interface isn't well integrated and can be inconsistent and confusing, especially compared with the competition. We would have preferred a capacitive touch screen instead of resistive.
