Nokia N96 review: King's new clothes

Maybe Nokia N96 wasn't really intended to take the market by storm and turn the world around. Maybe it was meant to quietly update the top multimedia gadget of the house and continue to cash in.

Tempted though we are to say that failure is looming over Nokia N96, we know better than that. There will be quite a lot of diehard Symbian fans (and even a few individuals that do actually need DVB-H support) that will go against their aesthetic sense and get the N96. read more →

  • 2.8" 16M-color TFT LCD display of QVGA resolution

  • Built-in DVB-H TV tuner
  • Symbian OS 9.3 with S60 3.2 UI
  • Dual ARM 9 264 MHz CPU and 128 MB of RAM
  • Inadequate battery life
  • No camera lens protection

Review: Another great multimedia phone from Nokia - but isn't it much the same as the last one?

The N96, like both flavours of N95, is a great multimedia phone, but it's a fairly straightforward upgrade on its predecessor, with increased memory as well as the thinner and lighter casing the main advantages.

If you haven't already got an N95, it's definitely worth a look, but if you have, and are thinking of upgrading, your decision will largely depend on how much you need the extra memory. read more →

  • 5 megapixel camera
  • A-GPS Sat Nav capability
  • 16GB memory, microSD slot, FM radio
  • HSDPA
  • Wi-Fi
  • Plasticky bodywork
  • Not a huge upgrade from the N95
  • No touchscreen control

Nokia N96 Review

On the whole we are impressed with the N96. It offers noteworthy upgrades to its forerunner, such as the DVB-H tuner (not usable in the States) and 16GB of internal memory with further expansion, and the design is also greatly refined. Running S60 Feature Pack 3 gives the N96 the flexibility to handle most anything the user throws at it. With an overall capacity of 28GB of memory (and theoretical capacity for 48GB) and a large screen it serves as a worthy PMP replacement. read more →

  • One of the best converged devices on the market
  • Music player is well laid out and sounds great
  • Camera and especially video are very good
  • Outgoing sound quality was top notch
  • Its design is blah; the device is big and the materials are only ok
  • Keypad is pretty lousy
  • Side buttons can be hard to operate

Nokia N96 review (unlocked)

Though the Nokia N96 is a powerful all-in-one smartphone with an impressive amount of user storage, it's not a significant upgrade to the N95 and is outdone by new devices coming to market, including the Nokia N97. read more →

  • The Nokia N96 features 16GB of storage and advanced multimedia features, including a 5-megapixel camera. The smartphone also has integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and 3G support.
  • The N96 froze on a couple of occasions and can sometimes be sluggish. Nokia's Ovi services aren't fully activated in North America, so you can't take advantage of those extra capabilities. It's also expensive.

Nokia N96

The N96 has everything a gadgeteer could want, including vast amounts of memory, a good camera, great video playback quality and built-in GPS. But its build quality is a bit iffy and it's not as easy to use as the iPhone. The N95 was a truly revolutionary product--and the N96 is simply a different evolution of the same thing. It's a still a great phone that's bursting at the seams with top-notch features, but it's not a huge update on the original. Most importantly, it doesn't provide anywhere near as good a user experience as the iPhone. read more →

  • 16GB memory with the option to expand
  • GPS
  • HSDPA
  • 5-megapixel camera
  • table stand.
  • Chunky, plasticky build
  • some N95 users may have expected more
  • Web browser not as good as Safari.
