Nokia 5530 XpressMusic review: Winner by design

The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic certainly seems both well reasoned and reasonable. It is a clear attempt to bring the S60 5th edition to the hands of a larger audience, which in turn should motivate a bigger developer community, which in turn will make the platform appealing to an even wider user group, which in turn would make Nokia lots of money. But we digress. Considering the appeal of the handset, it sure looks an important step towards bringing the touch-enabled S60 to par with the more mature competitors.

For now though, Nokia is wisely focused on fixing the bugs of its new OS and the more affordable handsets (whose shortcomings are more easily forgivable by default) seem the right way to go. read more →

How does Nokia's budget touchscreen phone compare?

The 5530 XpressMusic wouldn't be out of place against the heavyweight smartphones, although it would be among the worst on show. However, take into account the Nokia N97, the iPhone 3GS and the Palm Pre all cost around £350 more than the 5530 XpressMusic, and you can see why we like it a lot.

The overall feeling was that the phone impressed beyond the sum of its parts, as although there were times when the 5530 XpressMusic frustrated us, it also performed well a lot of the time and will almost certainly be a big hit around Christmas time. read more →

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Review

The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is not only a capable Symbian S60 5th Edition based smartphone, but a pretty good multimedia-oriented handset as well. The thing is we don´t believe it´s worth the money Nokia´s asking for it. It comes with a steep price tag, especially considering that its elder sibling, the 5800 XpressMusic, is available at virtually the same price, while delivering larger screen, GPS functionality and 3G connectivity. read more →

  • Compact size
  • Good touch screen sensitivity
  • Good in-call and audio quality
  • Robust battery
  • Display is unusable in direct sunlight
  • No GPS and 3G
  • Available with a price tag that´s simply unreasonable

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic

The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is significantly cheaper than most other touchscreen handsets on the market. While it's nowhere near as slick as the iPhone or HTC Hero, we still reckon it offers a good user experience for the price. The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is far from a perfect handset, and some will balk at the lack of 3G and GPS. But, given the phone's low price, these compromises are pretty acceptable in our book and, overall, we think the handset offers a good user experience for the money. read more →

  • Good sound quality
  • low price tag
  • Wi-Fi.
  • Small, resistive touchscreen
  • poor camera
  • no 3G.
