Motorola has updated its deceptively solid Defy ready for the Christmas smartphone buying frenzy – but has it done enough to make us want one?

We wanted to be very impressed by the Motorola Defy+, but in the end the update just doesn't do enough to get us going. We'd almost suggest that if you want a Defy you plump for the older model – it'll be cheaper and you won't be losing out on a great deal. read more →

  • Cleverly rugged
  • Battery management options
  • Impressive power longevity
  • Media is well presented
  • Low cost
  • Poor camera
  • Small screen
  • Unable to link contacts
  • Tiny icons

Motorola DEFY+ Review

Overall, the Motorola DEFY+ is not a bad smartphone by any means. What makes it a valuable offering though, is the fact that it's an IP67-certified device, designed to withstand some harsher conditions than what your typical handset is used to. Aside from the obvious advantage of being able to submerge it under water and throw it in the dust, without a single particle entering its shell, the DEFY+ is also quite usable and well-packed in terms of features. read more →

  • Rugged design
  • Very compact
  • Could be a bit faster
  • Below average camera

Motorola Defy+ review

Those looking to upgrade their existing Motorola Defys may be disappointed with the modest enhancements made to the Defy+, indeed it's not worth the investment, but newcomers to the waterproof smartphone market should be excited. It won't survive the most extreme of environments but for keeping going in the UKs wet and muddy wilderness, it's more than adequate. What's more it offers a proper smartphone experience and looks quite civil too. All that for £200 seems like a good deal to us. read more →

  • Waterproof housing is practical
  • Tough yet styish design
  • Screen is large enough for easy use
  • Processor is a bit sluggish
  • No button for the camera

Motorola Defy+

If you're looking for a phone that can survive your "Xtreme" lifestyle, then the Defy+ is at the top of its game. But it's a shame that this rugged exterior doesn't protect a better smartphone experience.

Telstra's AU$299 outright pricing makes it hard for us to write the Defy+ off based on its average camera and sluggish performance, but it does have its work cut out for it with models like Samsung's Gio and LG's Optimus Spirit offering comparable performance at half the price. read more →

  • Excellent rugged casing
  • Android 2.3
  • Good display for a prepaid handset
  • Sluggish-feeling performance
  • Camera could be better
  • MotoBlur still too demanding
