LG Optimus One P500 review: One and a half

So thats it for the LG Optimus One P500 review  its time to sum up. There were very few negative things we found about the phone and in many areas it actually managed to outperform our expectations.

And they have struck the right balance  the screen is good (unlike QVGA screens of other low-enders), the battery is huge, Android 2.2 Froyo gives even the 600MHz processor an edge against the competition and the software package is almost spotless (save for that laggy document editor and the lack of Flash). read more →

  • 3.2" 256K-color capacitive TFT touchscreen of HVGA resolution (320 x 480 pixels); Multi-touch input
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • Dual-band 3G with HSDPA (7.2 Mbps)
  • 600MHz CPU running Android 2.2 Froyo; 419MB RAM
  • 3 megapixel autofocus camera; face and smile detection, geotagging
  • Slow CPU makes editing Office documents a chore
  • Camera is just 3MP, has no lens protection, no flash and no dedicated shutter key
  • No Flash support in the browser despite Froyo
  • No front facing camera

Another 3.2" Android phone arrives, but just a little bit too late

Featuring a simple back-to-basics approach by LG, the Optimus One is a sturdy and affordable way to get into Android – especially since it's the first really cheap phone to come with Android 2.2.

However, the 600MHz processor and lower resolution screen place this near the bottom of the current Android pile in performance terms. While it's perfectly usable, it's more of an entry-level choice for newcomers or those on a budget than an Android powerhouse. read more →

  • Solidly built
  • Uncluttered Android 2.2 OS
  • Great battery life
  • Some clever custom LG widgets
  • Bland design
  • Processor struggles when asked to perform
  • Low-res screen makes web reading a chore
  • No Flash Player 10.1 support

LG Optimus One Review

As a calling device, the LG Optimus One functions decently, with clear voices in the earspeaker. Our callers said they were unable to hear us very distinctly, and the volume output was a tad low. The handset has a generous 1500mAh which lasts 7.5 hours in 3G mode, according to the manufacturer. What we saw in the LG Optimus One is a set of features, which match the asking price – nice capacitive touchscreen, smooth interface, various codecs support, and pleasant design. read more →

  • Almost stock, fluid Android 2.2 experience
  • Pleasant design
  • Rich video codecs support
  • Stuttering browser
  • Pictures appear slightly out of focus

LG Optimus One (P500)

Though not the most exciting of Android phones, this model has features other budget models lack, making it an attractive entry-level smartphone for cost-conscious buyers.

With a retail price of S$428 before operator subsidies, the Optimus One is quite affordable. If bought with a mobile plan from a telco, you could even get it without paying a cent upfront. Compared with other budget models such as the Huawei Ideos , HTC Wildfire and Motorola XT3, this LG has the most attractive set of hardware features, thanks to the HVGA screen, 512MB RAM and 1,500mAh battery. read more →

  • HVGA resolution display
  • 512MB RAM
  • Android customizations kept to minimum
  • Android 2.2 (Froyo)
  • physical buttons.
  • Poor onscreen keypad
  • processor struggles with some games
  • no LED for camera.

LG Optimus One review

But it’s not fair to focus on the niggly points with the Optimus One - from the moment you pick it up having only forked out £130 for it, you’ll be impressed with how similar it is to the top end Android phones on the market today.

And with a 1500mAh battery kicking things along, HTC should hang its head in shame, as this is a much bigger power pack than that plopped in the Desire HD, and this is under a third of the price. read more →
