We are pretty pleased with the LG Optimus 2X for the short time we spent with it. The handset proved that it has plenty of oomph under the hood and it should be able to meet the needs of the most demanding software for quite some time to come.
However if you are expecting to see some major upgrade over your current Android flagship you might be a bit disappointed. See the Optimus 2X is more of an investment in the future that should remain up to date for at least another year (unless LG fails to deliver on the software update end) than a great value-for-money purchase right now. read more →
Year 2010 wasn't particularly good for the LG mobile department. The Korean company entered it as one of the fastest growing in business and the announcements of the GT540 Optimus and GW990 in January made things seem rosy, but it was mostly downhill from there. A series of devices that failed to achieve their sales targets and the cancellation of the GW990 almost got us worried that LG will be relegated to the role of a runner up in the mobile phone industry.
The device is definitely the smartphone to get right now and will most certainly remain so for at least another month or two. read more →
- Quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G support
- 10.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
- 4.0" 16M-color capacitive IPS LCD touchscreen of WVGA resolution (480 x 800 pixels)
- Android OS v2.2 Froyo with LG Home launcher
- Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 proccessor, ULP GeForce GPU, Tegra 2 chipset
- Despite similar technology LCD isnt quite as impressive as the iPhone4 screen
- No dedicated camera key and no lens cover
- Captured 1080p videos not big improvement over 720p, have low frame rate
- No Android 2.3 Gingerbread at launch
- Audio quality is only average
We started off by talking about LG's failure to make itself known among the Android elite to this point. Up till now, the Korean giant has never so much as hinted at threatening the incumbents atop the Android pile, and the 2X is therefore its most significant smartphone launch, well.. It carries the hopes and aspirations of an entire multinational corporation, and if you want any evidence of how important mobile hardware is becoming, just go check out LG's latest quarterly and annual fiscal results. read more →
- The best smartphone hardware yet
- Camera picks up great amount of detail
- High quality LCD screen plus HDMI mirroring
- Sluggish UI
- Buggy software
- Dual-core CPU doesn't add much value (yet!)
It wasn't that long ago we were calling the LG Optimus 2X a superphone, but it hasn't really lived up to that billing. The geek cred of the hardware is undeniable, but it doesn't lead the pack in the same way when it comes to software.
It falls down at a few of the hurdles it seems especially designed to handle as well, such as playing our loaded 1080p videos. Recording 1080p was also disappointing, eroding some the Optimus 2X's unique selling points. read more →
- Dual-core power
- Excellent price
- Great screen
- Slick HDMI mirroring
- Brilliant music player
- Not as polished as some
- Flash impedes browser performance
- Didn't play some videos
- Disappointing camera/video recording
- Quiet speakers
The 2X is somewhat of a dichotomy. On one side, you've got moderately aesthetically pleasing hardware, class-leading performance from Tegra 2 that doesn't sacrifice battery life at the stake, and a bunch of notable and useful extras like HDMI mirroring. On the other, you've got some serious experience-killing instability issues (which need to be fixed by launch), a relatively mundane baseband launching at a time when we're on the cusp of 4G, and perhaps most notably a host of even better-specced Tegra 2 based smartphones with more RAM, better screens, and 4G slated to arrive very soon. read more →
