The New Chocolate packs enough skill to make comparison with some powerful smartphones almost inevitable. Now, it's obvious the LG BL40 is not in the same league as the likes of Hero, Omnia HD or Nokia X6 but we guess it will be more than welcome for an all-star friendly. It may sound unthinkable for a self-respecting geek to so much as consider the New Chocolate against any of those smart heavyweights, but the LG BL40 won't put up with being trivially dismissed as just another fashion phone.
Yes, the New Chocolate is a few things short of a smartphone but style it's got in excess. read more →
- One-off touchscreen bar design
- 4.01" 16M-color capacitive touchscreen of 21:9 aspect ratio
- Quad-band GSM support and UMTS with HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
- S-Class Touch UI with pinch zooming and gesture controls
- Accelerometer for screen auto-rotation
- Single-handed use not too comfortable due to the extra long form factor
- Video recording output is pathetic
- Piano black surface is a fingerprint nightmare
- Memory card slot is under the battery cover
- Web browser has no Flash support
The LG BL40 Chocolate is a great and bold step to be admired. There are some gripes to be had, mostly with the OS and battery life, but they're minor in the grand scheme of things.
The phone will certainly appeal to those who want to make a statement with their mobile and aren't afraid to use a little bit of tech now and again. If you can get your head around the multiple camera modes, are willing to fork out for a bigger memory card, want to watch a bit of video and are happy to learn to navigate the internet in a new fashion, then this phone should definitely be on your watch list when it comes time to renew your contract. read more →
- Great looking chassis
- High res and contrast screen
- Improved touch accuracy
- Sleek and glassy design
- Decent camera
- Poor battery life
- Dual screen UI not used enough
- Slight lag in the UI on a number of occasions
- Menu and back button layout is frustrating
Performance and conclusion:It´s painfully clear the LG New Chocolate BL40 is stunningly sluggish. The S-Class 3D interface itself looks nice, but all the animations and transition effects make it rather heavy. We would have liked it better if it looked less eye-catchy, but was more functional and easier to use. Well, it seems we will have to wait a bit more until we finally get there. It´s a good thing we don’t rate cell phones based on in-call quality only, because the BL40 would have been just a member of the crowd that doesn’t stand out with anything in particular. read more →
- Unique form and attractive design
- High-quality screen
- Nice audio playback capabilities
- Plays Xvid videos
- Sluggish interface
- Mediocre in-call quality
- Poor camera
The new Chocolate is delectably gorgeous and those looking out for a fashionable handset will find that few other phones can match this LG. LG's latest iteration of its Black Label series ranks tops in terms of appeal. If the design of a phone is important to you, then the Chocolate BL40 is worth considering. The unique form factor may not catch on with you at first, but it definitely has an excellent design with superb build quality. It obviously has its limitations and the camera fell short of our expectations. read more →
