The HTC Tattoo took the plunge to a lower segment of the smartphone market to give Android some fresh air and open space. It was quite a while ago really but now that more and more droids are keen to think small, lets see how it works for one of the pace setters. Compact size and reasonable price tag, the HTC Tattoo was among the first to try and sell Android to the masses.
Of course its not all rosy in the Tattoo garden. read more →
- Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
- 3G with HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
- Heavily customizable: exchangeable covers
- Android OS v1.6 (Sense UI), upgradeable to 2.1 Eclair
- 2.8" resistive touchscreen of QVGA resolution
- QVGA resolution doesnt do Android/ Sense UI graphics justice
- No video-call camera
- Camera lacks auto focus, flash and has a rather basic UI
- CIF@15fps video recording (352 x 288 pixels) is below par
- No voice dialing
The HTC Tattoo brilliantly showcases just what is great about the Android OS. It is one of the first mid-range phones on the market that you will be able to get free on a contract and not have to pay through the nose for the monthly tariff.
Couple this with the fact you can customise the handset (something that is bound to appeal to kids everywhere) and what you have is a nice and stylish device. read more →
- Interchangeable design
- Sense UI
- Great battery life
- Android 1.6
- Social-network savvy
- Screen not responsive enough
- Lag in loading app information
- Average camera
- Poor text capabilities
Frankly, we are in two minds about the HTC Tattoo. On the one hand, it´s a likeable, compact Android smartphone running the cool Sense interface. On the other, the concessions the manufacturer has had to make to keep the price low are neither minor, nor just a few. We don’t really have a problem with the screen size itself, the thing is the lower resolution is equivalent to extremely poor catalogue of applications, compatible with the device. read more →
- Likeable, compact design
- Sense interface
- Snappy
- Resistive screen with low resolution
- Far too few compatible applications
The HTC Tattoo is a fair entry-level Android device with a cool customization feature, but there are better options for the North American market. read more →
- The HTC Tattoo is compact, but still offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a 3.2-megapixel camera. The Android 1.6 device is enhanced by HTC Sense.
- It has a small, low-resolution screen. The smartphone also doesn't support North American 3G bands.
For an entry-level smartphone, the Tattoo met our expectations. It does everything you expect an Android device to do, and has great battery life to boot. The screen is a little small, but usable for the most part. Those with large fingers should really try it out at a store before deciding if they can live with the text input. read more →
