HTC Smart is the HTCs first experiment of going beyond the Android and Windows Mobile realms. In fact its their closest attempt to producing a basic feature phone.
Unfortunately, its software platform is what lets it down. The Brew platform is not the smartest of platforms out there, but perhaps with proper support and good developer base, it can be turned into something more than a regular feature phone interface. read more →
- Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
- 3G with HSDPA 3.6 Mbps
- Brew Mobile software platform with HTC Sense UI and social networking integration
- 2.8" resistive touchscreen of QVGA resolution
- 300 MHz processor, 256 MB RAM, 256 MB ROM
- No Wi-Fi connectivity
- QVGA resolution doesnt do Sense UI graphics justice
- Screen has poor sunlight legibility
- No video-call camera
- No voice dialing
We can see why HTC has decided to bring the Smart to market, but in its quest to keep costs down, the company has simply made too many compromises.
There's no denying that the Smart looks good, but underneath that compact and attractive case, there simply isn't enough substance. HTC Sense does its best to paper over the limitations of the hardware, but it only goes so far. read more →
- Good battery life
- Cheap for a new handset
- Stylish design
- Compact form factor
- Low resolution, resistive touch-screen
- No Wi-Fi
- No Exchange support
- Poor browser
- Slow data performance
The sturdy design of the HTC Smart probably has something to do with the fact that it's become a company trademark to grace its phones with high-quality and enduring materials. Indeed, the HTC Smart exudes that premium feel so typical of HTC's products. Qualcomm's Brew MP, on the other hand, seems a bit rough around the edges, although HTC's Sense UI on top of it brings a great deal of familiarity to the interface. read more →
- Solid design
- Good battery life
- Familiar HTC Sense UI
- No easy way to get third party applications
- Poor camera
- Price is not entry level
The HTC Smart does a good job of hiding the fact that it's a budget phone, thanks to a glossy, simple user interface. We'd like even more social-networking options, but the widgets and Web browser are better than the offerings of many competitors. Thanks to its Sense user interface, HTC's Smart looks cleverer than it is. But, as pay-as-you-go touchscreen phones go, the Smart is still one of our favorites, due to its attractive home screen widgets and big, finger-friendly icons. read more →
