HTC HD7 review: Dim the lights

Having the biggest screen around is a matter of prestige and the HTC HD7 is a marvel  the bezel around the screen is so thin it makes other phones look fat, despite their smaller screens.

But the HTC HD7 comes with the newest OS on the market and its one of the flagships. There are so many things that just work better on a bigger screen (web browsing, viewing photos, even typing on a virtual keyboard), which is what the HD7 thrives on. read more →

  • 4.3" 16M-color capacitive LCD touchscreen of WVGA resolution (480 x 800 pixels)
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • Dual-band 3G with HSDPA (7.2 Mbps) and HSUPA (2Mbps)
  • Windows Phone 7 operating system
  • 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 576MB RAM, 512MB ROM
  • High screen response time causes visible ghosting
  • Non-expandable storage
  • No lens protection
  • Quite heavy at 162 g (not that we mind)
  • Somewhat susceptible to the "antenna death grip" (signal drops by at least two bars)

HTC HD7

What can we say that we haven't expressed already? The HD7 is pretty much what you thought it would be. It's that same 4.3-inch blueprint that HTC has exploited to great success with the HD2 and EVO 4G, applied to the brand new Windows Phone 7 operating environment. The first question you'll truly have to answer for yourself is whether or not you want to be aboard the WP7 gravy train. We remain staunch believers that a smartphone is only as good (or as bad) as its software, so decide on your OS first and your particular handset second. read more →

  • Giant 4.3-inch display makes everything easier
  • Windows Phone 7 runs like well oiled machine
  • Great ergonomics
  • Questionable build quality
  • Poor viewing angles, contrast, color reproduction
  • Small battery for its size

HTC HD7 (T-Mobile)

The T-Mobile HD7 is a good-looking phone that's a fine canvas for Windows Phone's services, but it's not at the top of its class. read more →

  • Large, bright screen
  • Useful kickstand
  • Excellent audio and video performance.

Windows Phone 7 goes gargantuan - movie-watching the Microsoft way

We like the HTC HD7 as a phone – it builds nicely on the HD2 without being a complete revamp.

The Windows Phone 7 experience is ace on it, and simply just works, which is all we're really looking for at this early stage. read more →

    • Large screen is great for movies
    • Stereo speakers
    • Slick interface
    • Kickstand for easy use
    • Sound enhancement genuinely works
    • No Flash on internet browser
    • Windows Phone 7 still lacking some features
    • Some might find the screen too large
    • Lock button is hard to hit
    • HTC Hub doesn't offer a lot

    HTC HD7: Now With NoDo

This is a multipart conclusion, so let's start with the HD7. I've long felt that with the Venue Pro and the HD7, T-Mobile ended up with the two best WP7 launch devices, at least in the US. AT&T's range includes the Surround and it's pointless speaker, the Quantum and it's overall lack of desirability, and the Focus, which is thus far the most popular WP7 device. I'm not the biggest fan of the Focus; the SAMOLED screen is needlessly oversaturated and it tends to hurt battery life if you do a lot of messaging or email, mostly because WP7 has a lot of white-themed UI elements. read more →
