HTC Desire Z review: Desires A-to-Z

Its been over a year since HTC gave us a QWERTY messenger. But they still have it in them obviously. The Desire Z is a solid smartphone package with premium finish and a keyboard to be proud of.

There are plenty of smart messengers out there, but only two of them enjoy Android Froyo  the Motorola MILESTONE 2 and the Samsung Galaxy 551. read more →

  • Android OS v2.2 Froyo with HTC Sense UI
  • Comfortable 4-row QWERTY keyboard
  • The S-LCD screen is average (in terms of contrast, reflectiveness and sunlight legibility)
  • Non hot-swappable memory card
  • No front facing camera
  • Loose hinge
  • Quite heavy at 180 g

HTC Desire Z

We've already given the hardware plenty of love in our G2 review, but let us reiterate here that HTC's yet again done a very good job with crafting the Desire Z into a solid and professional piece of kit. Even after days of playing with the device, we're still impressed by the cunningness of the z-hinge -- despite its minor flaws -- that significantly improves the typing experience. Given the choice, we'd probably choose the Sense-laden Desire Z over the G2 for the added value without sacrificing much performance and battery life, although HTC will need to have a look at some of the aforementioned software bugs. read more →

  • Improved Sense UI and new HTC apps
  • Cunning engineering with good build quality
  • QWERTY keyboard feels good
  • Hinge problems could annoy some
  • Poor night time camcorder performance
  • HTCSense.com still buggy

HTC's next Android wunderkind wanders in sporting a QWERTY keyboard

Whether you like the HTC Desire Z or not is will depend on your love for a physical keyboard. If you want one desperately and love Android with a fiery passion, then the Desire Z is for you.

However, if you can take it or leave it, we'd suggest you look elsewhere. While the Android 2.2 OS works well and plays nicely within the phone, you're carrying round a rather substantial amount of extra heft with the Desire Z. read more →

  • Aluminium chassis
  • Responsive UI
  • Android 2.2 with Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Decent enough camera
  • Both physical and onscreen keyboards work well
  • Screen wobbles in closed mode
  • Hinge seems suspect
  • Battery not terrible but could have been bigger
  • No e-book reader, unlike Desire HD

HTC Desire Z Review

The HTC Desire Z is one of the only two handsets so far with the new version of Sense UI, and deserved our attention, even just for that. HTC didn't stop here to make it stand out in the Android crowd, however, and added a physical keyboard with clever, if somewhat pointless,  Z-hinge mechanism. Wrapped around in brushed aluminum, with soft-touch coating where needed, the HTC Desire Z is certainly a looker - a rather heavy one, however. read more →

  • New HTC Sense with cloud services and offline navigation
  • Powerful 2nd generation Snapdragon chipset
  • Attractive design and solid build
  • Generous 1.5GB ROM storage for apps
  • Heavy
  • Physical keys’ spacing and travel could be better
  • Poor choice of shooting modes
  • The earspeaker and loudspeaker could be stronger

HTC Desire Z

There aren't many choices for those who need a high-end Android device with a QWERTY, so it's a good thing the Desire Z is more than competent in terms of features and usability of its keypad.

Aside from the Motorola Milestone, there has not been any QWERTY-enabled Android devices in Asia Pacific catering to the high-end market. The Desire Z should fill that gap nicely, with its greatest competitor being the upcoming Motorola Milestone 2. read more →

  • Good landscape-oriented QWERTY keypad
  • nice aluminum finish
  • comes with latest HTC Sense addons
  • good performance.
  • One-day battery life
  • heavy
  • touch-sensitive shortcut keys
  • no front-facing camera.
