When we first made its acquaintance, the HTC Desire S was on display at this years MWC in Barcelona along with the Incredible S and the Wildfire S. Each phone in this trio is no more perhaps than a transitional model, a facelift that doesnt even warrant their own name. A bone to throw to upgraders to get them off your back while youre busy making the next big thing.
OK, lets get this out of the way. read more →
- Quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G support
- 14.4 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
- 3.7" 16M-color capacitive LCD touchscreen of WVGA resolution (480 x 800 pixels)
- Uses the best screen from HTC so far (along with the Incredible S)
- Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread with HTC Sense
- No dedicated camera key and no lens cover
- Below-par sunlight legibility
- Wi-Fi signal degrades when you cover the top part of the back panel
- microSD is below the battery cover
The best way we can think of to summarize the Desire S is by comparing it to its nearest and dearest. Set alongside the original Desire, it's head, shoulders and elbows above its elder, thanks to a massive improvement in battery life, a far more rugged construction, better ergonomics and the natural evolution of better specs and software. Up against the Incredible S, things are a little less clear-cut, as the bigger brother packs a significantly better camera sensor and a larger screen. read more →
- Built like an aluminum tank
- Solid performance and responsiveness
- The chin lives on!
- Capacitive keys don't always light up
- Onscreen keyboard could be better
- Sense UI is improved, but showing its age
If this verdict page comes out as being a little melancholy for a four-star phone, it's only because we had such high hopes for the Desire S. And why wouldn't we? Its predecessor sits top of our 20 best mobile phones list, after all.
The reason the Desire has kept up with everything that's come after is because it was so far ahead in the first place. The Desire S isn't. It's a great phone, and one we would wholeheartedly recommend in a vacuum. read more →
- Fast operation
- Slick UI
- Excellent cloud integration
- Stunning design
- Strong stills camera
- Wi-Fi antenna issue
- Frequently slow notifications bar
- Stuttery HD video recording
- Not cheap for its specs
- Still some Android UI issues
Wrapping up, reviewing the HTC Desire S has been a pleasure. The phone is a testament to good evolution being better than bad revolution. With the physical tweaks, the unibody construction, the improved HTC Sense and Gingerbread being on board, the sheer smoothness of the user experience makes it hard not to fall in love all over again. That said, this isn't a revolution, and power users will probably want some dual-core oomph from their phone, in which case, the LG Optimus 2X could fit the bill. read more →
- Small and robust unibody construction
- HTC Sense 2.1 offers tangible improvements
- Bright responsive screen with good contrast / color levels
- No camera button or HDMI connectivity
- Camera takes muddy indoor / low light photos
- Single-core processor may put some people off
A trio of S-series phones that update original HTC models are headed for Europe and Asia in mid-2011. read more →
