HTC Desire HD review: Most wanted

The HTC Desire HD is not in the mood to fool around  it has to be the biggest screen, the fastest processor, the latest software on the block.

Having mentioned it, the Samsung Galaxy S already has a solid market headstart and a Froyo release. Its screen may be 0.3-inches smaller, but its definitely superior. The TouchWiz is not the best custom UI but sure gets the job done. The Galaxy S costs at least 120 euro less than the Desire HD, which along with the Super AMOLED screen and the better HD videos is a serious advantage. read more →

  • Quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G support
  • 14.4 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
  • 4.3" 16M-color capacitive LCD touchscreen of WVGA resolution (480 x 800 pixels)
  • Android OS v2.2 Froyo with HTC Sense UI
  • Unibody design
  • LCD isnt quite as impressive as Retina or Super AMOLED (lower contrast, more reflective)
  • No dedicated camera key and no lens cover
  • No front facing camera
  • Quite heavy at 164 g (not that we mind)
  • The two lids at the rear have questionable aesthetics and usability

HTC Desire HD

So what to make of the Desire HD? It's undeniably hampered by some design flaws and poor battery life, but the sheer volume of good things it brings to the table can't be ignored. Froyo is the most polished and accomplished version of Android by a good margin, HTC's latest Sense enhancements add legitimate value to the proposition, and the aluminum unibody construction, upgraded internals, and jumbo screen are unignorably appealing. read more →

  • Terrific general performance
  • Flawless browser
  • Aluminum unibody plus jumbo screen
  • Fit and finish issues
  • Poor battery life
  • Camera lens left unprotected

The Desire's successor finally lands but is it an improvement?

It would be a massive step too far to say we were disappointed with the HTC Desire HD, as it's only because the bar has been set so high with previous iterations in HTC's Android portfolio.

The screen size will be an issue for some people, but that's subjective; you'll either want it or you won't. read more →

  • Super-slick UI
  • Great browsing experience
  • Dolby Mobile and SRS virtual surround sound
  • Decent e-book reader
  • Very easy to connect contacts
  • Poor battery life
  • No OLED screen

  • Video player needs overhauling
  • HTCSense.com connectivity still has bugs

HTC Desire HD Review

The HTC Desire HD is more of an exciting phone than it is a perfect phone. We're as excited about how HTC are evolving Sense UI, as we are about the hardware. As it happens though, the hardware and software are married into a wonderful mix, so well done, HTC. You're not really getting the best of anything. The Nokia N8 has a much better camera, the Samsung Galaxy S has a richer screen of a similar size and the iPhone 4 has a way better app support. read more →

  • Screen is ideal for movies on the go
  • Keyboard input offers one of the best touch experiences
  • Dolby Mobile / SRS provide great sound variation
  • HTC Sense offers fantastic functionality out of the box
  • Poor battery life
  • Occasional lag when multitasking
  • Fiddly battery / card covers
