Dell Streak review: Size does matter

The Dell Streak is trying to find the best balance between smartphone and tablet in a place where no one else has looked. The hardware certainly seems up to the task, matching the best the market has to offer. Or so it seems when you look at the specs sheet.

Right now, we cant help but feel that its some way behind both its smartphone and its tablet competitors. read more →

  • Quad-band GSM and tri-band 3G support, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
  • Full phone functionality
  • 5" 16M-color TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen of WVGA (800 x 480) pixel resolution
  • Android OS v1.6 (Donut) with nicely customized homescreen
  • 1GHz Snapdragon CPU
  • Too large and heavy for a phone, and too small for a tablet
  • Proprietary 30-pin connector for charging and USB connectivity
  • Disappointing screen quality and sunlight legibility
  • No Eclair/Froyo update yet (most units are still stuck on 1.6 Donut)
  • No smart dialing

Dell Streak (prototype)

Dell may not be the first to forage into the scene of oversized smartphones (see HTC Advantage and HTC Universal), but it looks like the combination of Android, Snapdragon, 3G affordability and resurrection of the tablet trend may give the Mini 5 a great potential. We found the five-inch form factor to be neither too big nor too small, perfect for browsing the web, watching videos (watch out, Archos 5!), car navigation and reading ebooks on the go. Even the battery life matches most current 3G phones, despite the larger screen and faster CPU. read more →

  • Great screen with wide viewing angle
  • Good overall build quality
  • Intuitive Android skin
  • Weak camera performance
  • Unstable early firmware
  • Offset keyboard due to numeric keypad

Dell Streak review redux: thoughts from the New World

For many, high-end browsing and messaging capabilities have overtaken the importance of voice calling in a phone, and that's a philosophy that giant handsets like the Streak embrace with open arms. It's an exciting, young segment of the smartphone market where we think we're going to see a lot of growth and innovation over the next few years -- and in many ways, Dell's 5-inch monster is at the forefront of that charge. read more →

  • Beautiful hardware
  • Solid construction
  • Great, well-utilized display
  • Still runs Android 1.6
  • Puzzling UI tweaks
  • No micro-USB connector

Dell's five-inch Android offering now comes with Froyo

Is this the device for you? The size really could be a sticking point for some people, so we strongly recommend trying it out yourself. Is the Dell Streak a good device, though? Definitely. Is it an improvement on the 1.6 version? Without doubt. It won us over in a lot of ways. read more →

  • Fantastic screen
  • Great browser
  • Good build quality
  • Loud and clear speaker
  • Too big for some
  • Poor on-screen keyboard
  • No micro-USB
