BlackBerry Torch 9810 review: Buttoned-up

The Torch 9810 completes our series of reviews of the new generation BlackBerry phones.

Of all three phones however, the Torch 9810 is the one that doesn't completely start from scratch. It's a sequel to the original Torch 9800. Up from 9800 to 9810 doesn't seem like much but the numbers don't tell the whole story. The new Torch slider has plenty of upgrade value: better screen, more processing power, silkier interface and HD video. Not bad at all for a phone built on the exact same chassis as the predecessor. read more →

Research in Motion BlackBerry Torch 9810

The 9810 offers a massive boost in hardware and very little noticeable improvement in firmware.

The Torch 9810 almost sparks our interest as a relevant device.. RIM's definitely aiming for the sky by making a leap in the internal components of its phones, turning it (and the Bold Touch 9930) into the most powerful handsets Research in Motion has ever sold. With the upcoming QNX platform, however, it may be too little too late. read more →

  • Excellent battery life
  • Responsive touchscreen via Liquid Graphics
  • Solid improvement over 9800
  • User Interface
  • Outdated design
  • Limited app support

RIM BlackBerry Torch 9810 (AT&T)

The BlackBerry Torch 9810 for AT&T is a very solid messaging phone, but the app revolution seems to have passed it by. read more →

  • Speedy UI and camera
  • Excellent battery life
  • Very good keyboard
  • Uses less data than other smartphones.

A slider, a touchscreen, a new approach. But can the Torch keep RIMs fire burning?

Against other models, like the HTC Desire or the iPhone, BlackBerry is the obvious corporate choice – no other manufacturer can match it in terms of the control and security that BlackBerry Enterprise Server offers. And when it comes to competing against them with its media capabilities, RIM has put in a stellar effort.

But it's been outshone and overshadowed by it's younger brother – the Bold 9780. read more →

    • Smooth touchscreen control
    • Great camera with scene selectors
    • Slide-out keyboard is a good compromise
    • Bright and crisp 3.2-inch screen
    • Good enterprise asset-tracking options
    • Too slow for serious smartphone use
    • Keyboard is too small
    • App selection too practical
    • Not great for media
    • A bit on the bulky side

Touchscreen, keyboard, 5MP snaps and a new OS - sound familiar?

Years ago, we'd have been thrilled by an upgrade, but now we don't want updates – now, consumers demand massive changes and this isn't a revolutionary product, merely an evolution ("evolution" being the word RIM uses itself on the marketing literature).

If you're obsessed with the BlackBerry Torch form factor, then we heartily recommend the BlackBerry Torch 9810 and wish you luck. But faced with the choice, we'd take the Bold 9900 anytime. read more →

    • Admirable battery life
    • Great screen
    • Improved onscreen keyboard
    • Unrivalled contacts management
    • Great still camera with effective image stabilisation
    • No Flash internet
    • Video is fiddly to turn the light on
    • Poor music loudspeaker compared to Bold 9900
    • Not much difference to Torch 9800
    • No NFC and only 5MP camera mean it's not massively future-proof
