When we reviewed the BlackBerry Bold 9000 we said it had everything a BlackBerry fan could want, except for maybe the more compact body of the Curve. And it's pretty obvious that someone over at RIM has been paying attention. They've done exactly that. And no, we're not taking credit, just giving it.
The tight connection between handset and service is a double-edged sword however. You either have to take the whole package or nothing at all. read more →
- 2.44" 65K-color TFT landscape display with a resolution of 480 x 360 pixels
- Comfortable four-row full QWERTY keyboard
- Quad-band GSM support and tri-band 3G with HSDPA
- Wi-Fi and built-in GPS and BlackBerry maps preloaded
- 3.15 autofocus megapixel camera, LED flash
- Many features are locked without a BlackBerry Internet Service account (plan)
- Mediocre camera performance and features
- No FM radio
- No video-call camera
- No TV-out functionality
At the end of the day, that's one thing we can't get past -- serious BlackBerry enthusiasts will tell you that the interface is doing just fine, and there are plenty of reasons to get hooked on these devices. For us, however, the BlackBerry UI is showing its age, and ultimately, beautiful hardware aside, this device is essentially exactly the same as every other BlackBerry. read more →
- Great optical trackpad
- Improved camera performance
- Snappier operation
- Outdated operating system
- Slightly cheaper build than its predecessor
- Keyboard is more cramped than the original
The Bold 9700 is a smart, shrewd update to the wildly popular Bold 9000and proof that there's still a place for hardware QWERTY keyboards for both consumers and business. read more →
- Near-perfect design
- Beautiful display
- Great voice quality
- Robust media sync options
- Excellent battery life.
While many will probably disagree with us, we're not sold on the more cramped keyboard that makes the new Bold 2 9700 look a lot like a hundred other BlackBerry designs out there today.
However, we do like the sleek chassis it comes in, and the trackpad is a clear upgrade from the trackball, so kudos to RIM for that. read more →
- Speedy interface
- Smooth controls
- Stylish chassis
- Slow internet browser
- Dating OS
- Slightly cramped keyboard
With so many current-generation BlackBerry devices available, it's really difficult to comprehend where the BlackBerry Bold 9700 fits in all of it. The original Bold 9000 really set the tone for the rest of RIM's devices to this point, but we feel that the Bold 9700 doesn't innovate RIM's stature. Sure we like the updated slim looks which make it one of the sleekest looking ‘Berry devices we've seen, but it's basically the same thing we've been seeing. read more →
- Slimmer looks
- UMA calling
- Decent battery life
- Unchanged design
