Apple iPhone 3GS review: Same clothes, new feel

It's true that the iPhone 3GS brings over only incrementing changes, there's nothing ground breaking about it.  But before everything else, the newly introduced changes on both software AND hardware level will make the new iPhone 3GS a more balanced smartphone most of all. That will give it some more charisma and it will hopefully lure some new users and get most current iPhone 2G users trade in their devices for a piece of Apple's latest tech.

But by keeping the old design of the device Apple took quite a risky step. read more →

  • A faster 600MHz CPU and double the RAM at 256MB
  • Noticeably faster performance
  • Faster network speeds of HSDPA 7.2Mbps
  • 3.2 megapixel auto focus camera with VGA@30fps video recording, touch focus with subject tracking, macro mode from as close as 10 cm
  • Double the storage space - 3GS is selling in 16GB and 32GB versions
  • The new iPhone 3GS lacks the same novelty factor as its predecessors - the lack of design changes is a turn-down
  • 3 megapixel camera with limited feature set hardly cuts it for a high-end device
  • There's still no flash or hardware shutter key for the camera
  • Despite the upgrade, battery life is still generally poor (2-year old iPhone 2G are still doing way better)
  • No videocalls functionality

Apple iPhone 3GS

There are probably two very large groups of people thinking about buying an iPhone right now. One set is current users, either those with the 3G, or those still using the original model. The other set is a group of new users -- people who've never owned an iPhone and are now faced with not one, but two different options when it comes to getting in the door. For both groups, there are huge questions to answer about whether or not getting the 3GS makes sense, and very few of them have to do with the quality of the phone. read more →

  • Best-in-class UI
  • Huge amount of apps available
  • Much faster than previous versions
  • Lacks multitasking
  • Not a big change from the iPhone 3G
  • Locked to AT&T's unreliable network

Apple iPhone 3GS (AT&T)

The iPhone 3GS gives new life to the 50,000 available iPhone apps with its much faster performance. This is a terrific handheld computing and Internet device, but understand that voice calls aren't its top priority. read more →

  • Best handheld computer ever
  • Faster and more powerful than the iPhone 3G
  • Excellent video camera mode.

The definitive verdict on the new 3G S iPhone

The iPhone 3GS is a tip top mobile phone. Its improved functionality is good, but it's certainly not worth upgrading for. However, if you're new to the iPhone market, then choosing between the two should also be a no-brainer - go for the iPhone 3GS. The faster speeds, better camera and a whole host of other extras will please many, and for that reason it's worth it (although we suggest you think long and hard over whether you need 32GB or just 16GB of internal memory, as there's a bit of a price hike between the two.)

    • Great touchscreen
    • Faster processor
    • iPhone 3.0 software
    • Camera with autofocus
    • Poor coverage at times
    • Expensive to upgrade to
    • Internet tethering costs extra
    • Battery life doesn't seem to have been improved
