Samsung has officially introduced 5nm process-based Exynos 1080 which will be the successor to Exynos 980 and serve as a chipset for upper mid-range phones or flagship-killers. Exynos 1080 is based on the latest 5nm process and employs the latest Cortex-A78 cores, which the recently announced Kirin 9000 couldn’t leverage.

The SoC will be first employed in Vivo X60 and we have heard reports that Samsung is trying to bring Oppo and Xiaomi onboard as well.

Exynos 1080 Features

The Exynos 1080 employs four Cortex-A78 cores that ARM introduced early this year alongside the more performance-oriented Cortex-X1. These cores focus on improving efficiency represent the third generation of ARM Austin-family microarchitecture that started off with Cortex-A76.

The SoC follows a tri-cluster design. The base Cortex-A55 cores are now clocked at 2.0GHz similar to the current Exynos 990 flagship. The prime Cortex-A78 goes up to 2.8GHz and the three prime Cortex-A78 cores that should shoulder much of the demanding everyday load go up to 2.6Ghz.

Of course, the end result will depend on Samsung’s implementation. Combining the 20% sustained power improvements ARM assured for Cortex-A78 with higher clock frequencies and gains from switching to 5nm process should result in a decent generational leap.

The Exynos 1080 employs 10 core Mali G78 GPU and supports up to LPDDR5 RAM and up to UFS 3.1 storage. Manufacturers will be able to implement 2K@ 90Hz but not at 120Hz. The FHD+ resolution displays will however support 144Hz refresh.

Exynos 1080 supports both 5G NR Sub-6GHz and mmWave. Other features include Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), FM Radio, GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo.
