Samsung Galaxy A55 is tested with Exynos 1480 & AMD GPU

Samsung most certainly uses in-house Exynos chipsets on its mid-range smartphones such as Galaxy A53 and Galaxy A54, among others. Given the negative experience that Exynos chips are known for, is it even possible for Samsung to use Qualcomm chips on future mid-range phones? Well, we aren’t sure but we have heard the upcoming Galaxy A55 is not a part of Qualcomm’s clan.

Samsung Galaxy A55 is reportedly being tested with Exynos 1480

It has been quite a long time since we started hearing about Samsung Galaxy A55. With that latest piece of the puzzle, the phone is being tested with a processor codenamed S5E8845. For context, the S5E8825 was Exynos 1280 and similarly, S5E8835 was Exynos 1380. It doesn’t require a rocket scientist to deduce what S5E8845 means i.e. Exynos 1480 in case you weren’t aware already.

There’s not much known about the yet-unannounced Exynos 1480. However, we have heard that the South Korean giant has joined forces with graphics giant AMD to introduce an AMD GPU onboard Exynos 1480. Rumors suggest Samsung wants to hail AMD’s GPU to equip Exynos chipsets (on mid-range phones) with elevated imaging capabilities and machine learning. Gaming performance isn’t a priority for the mid-range phones.

According to a tipster Tech_Reve, Samsung is developing an mRDNA-based GPU for Exynos 1480. It will be different from the high-end Exynos 2200 chipset packed with AMD RNDA2 graphics that brought ray tracing. But hey, it’s the start of something big, at least for the mid-range smartphones.

Apart from that, we have heard about a 50MP primary camera, the same as its predecessor Galaxy A45. Information about the secondary ultrawide and front-facing camera remains elusive although we are hoping for a 10MP shooter for the latter.

Some obvious specs that we can say for sure (but not with absolute confirmation) include a stereo speaker, IP67, 120Hz sAMOLED panel, a Gorilla Glass on front and rear, and probably a microSD card slot in the mix as well.
