In 2020, Oppo withdrew its Find X series from India following the launch of Find X2. The company appears to be reconsidering re-entering India’s ultra-premium camera flagship segment.

That could be why the brand recently invited us to tour its Camera R&D and manufacturing facility in Shenzen, China. They also lent us their 2024 flagship—the Find X7 Ultra—to test and evaluate thoroughly.

Having spent several weeks with the device, I’m thoroughly impressed with what OPPO has achieved with the X7 Ultra. It’s a powerhouse phone boasting top-of-the-line hardware and ColorOS 14 software, positioning it as a serious contender among the best smartphones on the market.

In this OPPO Find X7 Ultra review, I’ll delve into its design, camera capabilities, and overall performance.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra Price and Availability

OPPO Find X7 Ultra is currently not retailing in India. Until this review was published, it was only available in China. It has 12GB RAM with 256GB and 512GB storage options. It is currently retailing for the best price at RMB 5,999, which roughly translates to Rs 69,000.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra Review: Design and Build

With its dual-tone finish, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra stands apart. Of course, style is personal, so it might not float everyone’s boat, but I love this phone’s design.

The loaned unit I received for review is made of navy vegan leather on the bottom half and a shiny white finish on top. The glass, metal, and vegan leather mix makes the Find X7 Ultra more appealing. Right in the middle, there’s this vast circular camera setup in metallic silver.

Instead of the flat frames we saw in 2024 flagships from other brands, OPPO has persisted with curved glass and aluminum frames that seamlessly blend. It’s not a sleek phone by any means. It weighs around 221 grams but is surprisingly comfortable to hold. The curved edges give the illusion of a slimmer device.

The soft vegan leather feels good in hand, offering excellent grippy. During my review period, we used the phone without a case, even though the leather part didn’t pick any smudges or finger grease.

As you flip the phone to the front, you will notice a 6.82-inch display protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. OPPO has placed an optical fingerprint reader underneath the under-display.

Compared to other flagships, the OPPO has positioned its fingerprint sensor slightly high, ensuring you don’t have to adjust the phone to unlock it. In our experience, it worked as expected without any speed or accuracy issues.

One cool new thing they added is the OnePlus-like alert slider with Oppo’s unique twist. If you slide it to the top, it activates VIP mode, shutting off the camera, mic, and location access. I accidentally triggered this a few too many times to find it all that helpful, but maybe you’re big on privacy.

The phone also boasts a top-notch IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, so we didn’t think twice about using it during unexpected Shienzen rain.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra Review: Display and Audio

The Find X7 Ultra boasts a top-notch display, as you’d expect from a flagship from a top brand.  It sports a 6.82-inch panel delivering 3168×1440 QHD+ resolution. The display is a 120hz LTPO panel, which means it can adapt to refresh according to the content on the screen. You will enjoy silky-smooth 120Hz motion while scrolling on the web or system menus. It can also go down 1Hz while displaying static images to save power. It also uses 2160Hz PWM to minimize flicker for those with sensitive eyes.

The display delivers excellent dynamic range, accurate colors, and excellent brightness levels. The ColorOS lets you pick three from three color profiles: Natural, Pro, and Vivid. You can also change the color temperature from warm to color as you like.

OPPO’s ColorOS also offers eye-care options to protect your eyes. Features include an image sharpener and SDR to HDR conversion.

Since it’s a flagship, OPPO hasn’t compromised on anything. It also supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Oppo’s proprietary ProXDR format. After the upcoming software update, it will also be compatible with Google’s Ultra HDR.

As for audio, the phone delivers stereo output using a down-firing driver for the heavy lifting while an earpiece tweeter handles higher frequencies. It also supports Dolby Atmos and spatial audio out of the box. Overall, the speakers are loud and deliver clean sound, which is good enough for listening to podcasts and casual music.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra Review: Performance and Software

Since the Oppo Find X7 Ultra is not available internationally, the unit that we received was tailor-made for the China market. So, as expected, the Play Store and other Google services were missing from the phone. However, sideloading them was easy, and most of them worked flawlessly.

There are several pre-installed apps. Most of them are Chinese, and since they are useless to me, I uninstalled them, including TikTok. Once an issue is found with this version of ColorOS, you can use a custom launcher, as you are not allowed to change the default version.

Certain areas, such as global search and phone dialer search, remain in Mandarin despite using English as the default system language.

It was interesting to see the OPPO Breeno AI assistant, which is basically their own alternative to Google Assistant and has deep integration into the system.

While I couldn’t use it personally as it was all in Chinese, I saw folks using it in Shenzhen during my recent trip. I hope OPPO adds English language support so we can also try it. ColorOS 14’s features, like Smart Image Matting, File Dock, etc., are also baked in the Chinese version.

Interestingly, the Find X7 Ultra gallery app has a generative AI-based object removal tool that works, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and Google Pixel 8 Pro.

OPPO has left no scope for complaint in terms of performance. The Find X7 Ultra is driven by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, which gets additional support from a dedicated security chip. Our review unit has 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage.

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra performs like a champion phone with this powerful hardware and software amalgamation. Multitasking is flawless, apps open instantaneously, and animations are buttery smooth.

I tried several games, including popular ones like Gensin Impact, BGMI, and COD Mobile, with the highest graphics settings and frame rate locked at maximum. The touch response was snappy, and frame rates were constantly at 120hz. After an extended session of 30 minutes, the phone didn’t heat up.

If you are a synthetic benchmark nerd, you will be happy to note that it scored almost 2 million on Antutu. Here’s a complete summary of OPPO Find X7 Benchmark test results:

The Find X7 Ultra also has NFC for payment, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 for connectivity, and an IR blaster that can replace your TV, AC, and other remotes.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra Review: Cameras

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra is an impressive camera system co-developed with Hasselblad featuring Proporiotry Hypertone Image Engine algorithms. The primary camera has a 1-inch sensor with an f/1.8 7p lens, optical image stabilization, and Sony’s new 1-inch sensor, which is specifically designed for smartphones and delivers better and more consistent results than the previous generation’s 1-inch sensor. This new sensor from Sony offers 32% more power efficiency and reduced reflections, resulting in better results.

For the ultrawide camera, OPPO roped in a 50MP Sony LYT-600 sensor, which is a comparatively smaller LYT-900 but still outperforms competitors. It manages to deliver 123° ultra-wide results consistent with the primary camera.

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra has taken an innovative approach with the other two cameras, which have a periscope setup, a rare sight even in flagships. One is a 3x periscope telephoto lens with a larger 1/1.56″ sensor, ensuring excellent 3x performance. The other is a second periscope telephoto camera with a 6x lens and a 1/2.51″ sensor, making it the first phone with two periscope cameras.

Compared to competitors, OPPO added a second periscope telephoto camera with a 6x lens and a 1/2.51″ sensor to address limitations in detail, making it the first phone with two periscope cameras.

In auto mode, the OPPO Find X7 Ultra captures pleasing photos with vibrant colors and detailed HDR results. The primary camera delivers 12MP images with excellent detail and dynamic range. The pictures are sharp without oversharpening, and the dynamic range remains consistent in different lighting conditions. The camera detects the scene in low light and kicks in Night mode to take sharp, noise-free, low-light shots.

The  OPPO Find X7 Ultra’s ultrawide camera uses a 50MP Sony sensor with a 123° field of view and performs similarly to competitors. The ultra-wide camera captures colors that are consistent with those of the primary camera. It delivers excellent dynamic range but images are slightly less sharper than the primary camera.

At 3x zoom, the shorter telephoto camera captures excellent shots with great detail, dynamic range, and colors. The 6x telephoto camera performs equally well. Even with a 6X telephoto lens, users can capture noise-free sharp images with excellent dynamic range and color rendering.

For the pro users, OPPO has included Hasselblad Master Mode, which lets you capture RAW+ images, which are RAW images with OPPO’s HyperTone Image Engine computation data. This feature is perfect for those who need more control over the images they capture and want to take their photography skills to the next level.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra Review: Battery and Charging

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra has a built-in battery pack of 5,000mAh, which supports 100W wired fast charging. Thankfully, OPPO bundles a charger within the box. I used this as my daily driver, and during my time with the phone, it lasted an entire workday without changing my usage pattern, which I expect from every flagship smartphone in 2024.

With this bundled charger, it took me about 30 minutes to charge from 20 to 100 percent. It also supports 50W wireless charging, but we couldn’t test it as it requires a 50W OPPO wireless charger, which we currently don’t have.

Review Verdict: Should You Buy The OPPO Find X7 Ultra?

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra is a flagship smartphone that boasts of top-notch features and specifications, making it a device worth considering. Although it is currently only available in China in 2024, at a price of around Rs 69,000, its impressive design and performance make it a device that is worth the wait.

The device’s leather finish option, which is rare in smartphones, adds a premium touch and feel to the device, while the curved AMOLED display provides an immersive viewing experience. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which offers lightning-fast performance, making it a breeze to navigate between apps and multitask.

The Hasselblad system present in the device is exceptional and captures stunning shots in both day and night settings, making it one of the best camera systems in a phone in 2024. Whether you are an amateur or a professional, the OPPO Find X7 Ultra’s camera system is sure to impress.

In conclusion, the OPPO Find X7 Ultra is a device that deserves to be made available on retail shelves in India. It is a device that will cater to the needs of users who are looking for a premium smartphone with top-notch features. Let’s hope that OPPO brings the Find X7 Ultra to India soon, as it is sure to be a huge success.
